I've seen it referred to often as the epitome of grimdark, and set up as opposing Tolkien, but perhaps the distinction there is more a difference in content and tone than in scope? In that sense high fantasy paints on a relatively large canvas - cast of hundreds, multiple kingdoms/continents/planets, detailed histories spanning generations -- where "low" fantasy is smaller in terms of geography and cast and shorter in terms of duration?
