Nominations Open

Nominations are now open here. Full nominations information is available in this section of this round's rules post; this post is intended to summarise the most important points, particularly where there are differences from what is typical in most other exchanges.

You can nominate up to five fandoms, with seven character slots and five "worldbuilding" slots (using the AO3 relationship fields) for each.

Fandom names used should make it clear what the scope of the source material intended is. This may mean using AO3 non-canonicals. It is OK in this exchange for nominated fandoms to overlap in whole or in part (e.g. "Star Wars - Movies Only", "Star Wars - Legends", "Star Wars - New EU" would have some elements in common and others not). Crossovers are OK if and only if the crossover happened in canon; in this case, nominate under both fandoms, divided by a / (e.g. "How To Get Away With Murder/Scandal").

Please do:
  • disambiguate all tags with the name of the fandom (please ignore the instructions on the nomination page itself to choose AO3 canonicals - these only occasionally have the disambiguations; unfortunately, this is standard AO3 text that I can't override)
  • nominate the two "default" character tags used in the exchange -- "Original Character(s) (name of fandom)" and "Any or No Characters (name of fandom)" -- in each fandom you nominate
  • preface all worldbuilding tags with "WB: "
  • double check that your character tags are in character fields and your worldbuilding tags are in relationship fields (on the approval interface, I have no way to see which tags were nominated as which)
  • be patient while waiting for your tags to be approved

Please don't:
  • nominate actual relationships (e.g. A/B, C&D) in the Relationship fields
  • nominate RPF, or worldbuilding tags for close-to-real-world canons that would similarly constitute solely RL research with no use of creativity to answer the questions
  • nominate AU ideas, unless the AU in question appears within the canon
  • (ETA) nominate fandoms without at least one worldbuilding tag

This post doubles as an evidence post and a brainstorming post. Feel free to comment here to provide extra information you think may help me deal with your nominations, or to discuss with other fans how best to organise your shared fandoms.

I will post clarifications posts regularly during the tag set sorting period; please keep an eye on the comm to see if any of your tags appear with issues or queries.

Nominations will close at 2155 UTC on Wednesday 16th January (countdown).

Star Trek

For purposes of this challenge, I'm wondering if maybe it's better to nominate by era/continuity rather than series. I.e.:

Prime universe, TOS era
Prime universe, TNG era
Kelvin universe
Mirror universe, ENT era
Mirror universe, TOS era
Mirror universe, DIS era

That would allow for characters who would naturally crossover to do so, and also means that you're not locked into a specific series when an event crosses over.

My main concern is that there are so many ways that this could be sliced and diced, and obviously that wouldn't be good either if the various slices are too narrow. Any other Trek fans want to weigh in? Am I overthinking it?

My problem with that would be that ENT is canon for both Prime and Kelvin universe and wouldn't be covered by Prime universe, TOS era and being lumped in to Kelvin universe makes that category kind of unwieldy especially when you are differentiating TOS and DIS era Mirrorverse.

I'd also wonder about where Discovery fits in there. It's effectively TOS era but some people aren't keen on its retcons to that era, eg the very existence of the lead character. (And due to the way it's available in the US, not all Trek fans have access to it.)

Hmm, yeah. I'm thinking trying to play with this might cause more problems than it solves. I'll probably nominate by series, like usual.

Original works - categories?

[personal profile] morbane 2019-01-08 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Tossing around ideas! I want to nominate and request fic/art/meta about a near future with teleportation technology and how the world would adapt to said teleportation technology. Shall that fall under Original Works - Sci Fi, or Original Works - Near Future Sci Fi, or something else? Does anyone else have any ideas that might fall into this category?

Yes, I am. Thank you! Excited for other modern day + major sci-fi element ideas.

In the instructions above, you have Any or No Character(s) (name of fandom), but in last year's tag set, it's Any or No Characters (name of fandom) everywhere I can see - which is correct, Character(s) or Characters, or does it matter? (Sorry for all the questions)

Harry Potter

[personal profile] mechanonymouse 2019-01-08 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've nominated Harry Potter (Books 1-7), Harry Potter - Wizarding World (No Pottermore) and Harry Potter - Wizarding World (Including Pottermore) intending for those to limit the available canon to just the core books, everything but Pottermore and everything.

shopfront: Source: Star Trek 2009. Distance, ensemble shot on the Enterprise bridge. (Trek - [AOS] super shiny fandom of win)

Star Trek AOS/DS9

Hi, just flagging this in case there's any issues or it needs tweaking. I've used the same crossover tags under Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies)/Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as were approved last year. The intended scope of the requests are in the AOS verse but extrapolating into the future to DS9-era and worldbuilding for what changes AOS events might cause.

Hey, it looks like something funny happened with the SCP Foundation fandom. There are a bunch of duplicate tags.

Dunno if this is old, but I've been nominating under Star Trek (regular TNG, DS9, TOS and AOS) fandoms, is that alright or should I edit and group my nominations under different fandom tags?
