The "No Characters" Guide

The updated version of the rules says:

The “No Characters” tag in a prompt means that the requester is leaving the use of characters up to their creator. It does not prohibit a creator from using characters.

Including "No Characters" in the tag set for each fandom is designed to improve the chances of people matching to other people who want to receive/create the type of works they themselves are interested in, since some types of worldbuilding fanworks do not include characters in the traditional sense, or at least do not focus on them.

Here's how this will work in practice:

"No Characters" and Requests

How do I request No Characters"?

Put it in like any other character tag in the Character section of the sign up form.

Do I have to request "No Characters" if I am requesting the in-universe "Meta" category of fanwork?

No. The original version of the rules said that you did, but this has now been changed.

For this fandom, I definitely only want to receive fanworks with no characters at all.

Then request the "No Characters" tag by itself and add a Do Not Want in the optional details box about characters appearing. You will definitely match to someone who offered "No Characters" (and is therefore open to creating that style of fanwork), but unless you DNW characters, they are not obliged to exclude them completely.

For this fandom, I definitely want to receive something character-focused.

You can ensure this by not including "No Characters" in the character tags you request; all fandoms in the tag set will have at least "Original Character(s)" in addition to "No Characters". You should then match to someone offering a character tag you have requested, along with at least one of your requested worldbuilding tags.

"No Characters" and Offers

How do I offer "No Characters"?

Put it in like any other character tag in the Character section of the sign up form.

Do I have to offer "No Characters" if I am offering the in-universe "Meta" category of fanwork?

No. The original version of the rules said that you did, but this has now been changed.

For this fandom, I only want to create fanworks with no characters at all.

Then offer the "No Characters" tag by itself; you should only match to people who are open to receiving that type of fanwork. (Their requests might include other ideas as well, including character-focused prompts, but they have definitely indicated their openness to that style by including the "No Characters" tag.)

For this fandom, I definitely want to create something character-focused.

You can ensure this by not including "No Characters" in the character tags you offer; all fandoms in the tag set will have at least "Original Character(s)" in addition to "No Characters". You should then match to someone requesting a character tag you have offered, along with at least one of the worldbuilding tags you offered.

I didn't sign up to offer "No Characters" but now I've got my assignment and it has a request for it.

The exchange runs on OR matching, so this might well happen, if your recipient requested "No Characters" alongside some character tags which you did offer. You are definitely not obliged to create a "No Characters"-style work if you didn't offer it; create for the tag or tags you matched on.

If there are no fandom/character/worldbuilding tag combinations in common at all between your offer and the request you've received, then something has gone horribly, horribly wrong with matching. In the unlikely event of getting an assignment with no match, please contact the mod ASAP as matching will need to be rerun, and other participants will need to be warned that their own assignment is likely to change.

So I'm okay with no characters, original characters, or canon characters. Should I select both "No Characters" and "Original Characters", or just one of them?

Thank you! That's what I thought; I just wanted to be sure because I'm used to "AND".
