There are three post-default-deadline pinch hits. To claim a pinch hit, please comment on this post clearly stating which pinch hit you are interested in and your AO3 username. All comments are screened; comments will not be replied to -- if you see a pinch hit marked as claimed but it wasn't assigned to you, then someone else got it on that occasion. (You are, of course, more than welcome to treat.)
ETA: Sue date for these is currently March 15, 2155 UTC, along with other assignments, but there is some flexibility - get in touch if you want to discuss a different deadline.

The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien
WB: Noldorin politics and diplomacy (The Silmarillion), WB: The projects and achievements of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain (The Silmarillion), WB: The effect of the Oath on Fëanor and his sons (The Silmarillion), WB: Infrastructure and the economy in First Age Beleriand (The Silmarillion), WB: Houseless Elves (The Silmarillion), Maedhros | Maitimo (The Silmarillion), Fingon | Findekáno (The Silmarillion), Fingolfin | Ñolofinwë (The Silmarillion), Original follower(s) of Fëanor and/or his sons (The Silmarillion), Original Character(s) (The Silmarillion), Celebrimbor (The Silmarillion), Fanfiction, In-Universe Meta
DNW: A/B/O, noncon/dubcon, underage, complete villainization of Fëanor & sons (i.e. they can run the gamut from "well-intentioned but deeply flawed" to "complicated, very morally grey, and often do terrible things" but I'd prefer they not be written as outright evil).
General likes: Original female and nonbinary characters, characters of color, complicated morality, nerdy or political banter (especially if it doubles as flirting).
I've listed optional requests for each of the tags below, but feel free to combine tags, use some of these ideas as a jumping-off point and discard others, or message me on anon with asks/clarifications/details (cherepashkadrabbles on tumblr).
Houseless Elves: I would love to see something about houseless Elves who remained in Middle-earth, refusing the call of Mandos, but nevertheless found ways to resist Morgoth and Sauron, and avoid getting captured or being forced to serve the Shadow. Can they draw strength from the land in places they frequented in life? Do they communicate with each other? Can the living only perceive them mind-to-mind or do they have other ways of influencing the physical world?
Noldorin politics and diplomacy: Can be Great Journey, Years of the Trees, First Age, post-reembodiment in Valinor, or even modern Noldor sneaking under the radar in our world. I see the Noldor as thriving on debate and vigorous dissent; a decision is only valid if it has been thoroughly argued over, and a ruler only has authority insofar as they can convince enough people to accept their authority. How does the Noldor's approach to politics and governance affect their interactions with other kindreds? Also, the Silmarillion is very Noldor-centric, so I'd love to see something from the perspective of another kindred observing Noldorin politics with academic detachment/complete bafflement/eye-rolling exasperation. If writing First Age, would love to see something about relations between the Noldor and the Laiquendi. If writing Great Journey, would love to see debate among those who undertook the journey and eventually became Noldor along the way. How did Finwë end up as king? And if writing Years of the Trees, how does Míriel's death influence ideas of sovereignty and succession in a community of immortal beings?
Effect of the Oath on Fëanor and his sons: I'd love to see something about their internal experience of the Oath. Is it like an involuntary compulsion? Do they believe they're doing the right thing at the second and third Kinslayings? Especially intrigued at the ways the Oath seems to affect different Fëanorions differently. And once the First Age is over, are the released from the Oath? Or are they still compelled to go after the last Silmaril if/when they get reembodied? Bonus points for fractious family dynamics.
The projects and achievements of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain: Would love to see interspecies collaboration and analogues of modern science, and shared enthusiasm for research helping to overcome cultural differences. Elves and Dwarves and Men building particle accelerators and theorizing plate techtonics! Accidentally discovering X-rays while playing around with cathode ray tubes! Getting drunk and/or high together and having long philosophical discussions about the nature of consciousness and the structure of society, or solving an unsolved conjecture in a flash of inspiration! But also, what's it like for the mortals who collaborate with the Elves, who can easily wait a couple hundred years for the results of an experiment while four or five generations of Men might pass through? I enjoy both Celebrimbor/Narvi and Celebrimbor/Sauron if either of those pairings features in your Second Age imaginings. Bonus points for terrible nerdy puns.
Infrastructure and the economy in First Age Beleriand: How the heck do you maintain and supply a 400-year siege? Are Amrod and Amras (or just Amras, if you subscribe to the HoME version of Losgar) running a massive hunting/farming/forestry operation in Ossiriand to supply their brothers? Does Caranthir manage to negotiate preferred-customer rates with Belegost and Nogrod after a century or two? How much of a game-changer are the Palantíri in terms of long-distance coordination and communication? When Men arrive, how does that change the economy – especially given that time horizons for viable contracts suddenly get much shorter? Post-Dagor Bragollach, how much of the infrastructure and economy of northern Beleriand gets destroyed? How much are they able to rebuild?
Thank you for writing, worldbuilder!

Discworld - Terry Pratchett
WB: Death's Domain (Discworld), WB: Witches' Magic (Discworld), WB: Becoming a Witch (Discworld), WB: Swamp Dragons (Discworld), Death (Discworld), Magrat Garlick (Discworld), Gytha "Nanny" Ogg (Discworld), Polly "Ozzer" Perks (Discworld), Any or No Characters (Discworld), Esmerelda "Granny" Weatherwax (Discworld), Samuel Vimes (Discworld), Cheery Littlebottom (Discworld), Fanfiction, In-Universe Meta
DNW: A/B/O, noncon/dubcon, underage, Bechdel fails.
General likes: Depiction of female and nonbinary characters, characters of color, satire.
I've listed optional requests for each of the tags below, but feel free to combine tags, use some of these ideas as a jumping-off point and discard others, or message me on anon with asks/clarifications/details (cherepashkadrabbles on tumblr).
Death's Domain: How does time work in Death's domain? I love the Death of Rats and would very much enjoy seeing the Auditors vs. the Death of Rats. Does Death get annoyed at having to show up but not get to do his job every time someone has a near-death experience?
Witches' Magic and/or Becoming a Witch: Would love to see past interactions between Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, Witches' magic completely failing to fit within the schemas of the Wizards at Unseen University, and basically any scenario involving the Witches being matter-of-fact-ly badass. Bonus points for Granny Weatherwax being completely grumpy about saving the world.
Swamp Dragons: Would love to see excerpts from Sybil's book about dragon breeding and care, especially if it included adorable (by Sybil's standards; by anyone else's standards, outright alarming) anecdotes about Sybil's favourite dragons. Adventures of a dragon who escaped the sanctuary and wound up wandering Ankh-Morpork? Dragons discovering they actually really like CMOT Dibbler's sausages, but it makes their fire go wonky? One of Sybil's dragons deciding it really, really loves Vimes or Angua or Cheery, much to that Watch member's dismay?
Thank you for writing, worldbuilder!

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
WB: Harad After the Fall of Sauron (LOTR books), WB: Eastern Middle Earth (LOTR books), WB: The Ring War in Eastern and Southern Middle-earth (LOTR books), WB: Dwarf Culture (LOTR Books), WB: Nature spirits in Middle-earth (LOTR Books), WB: The nature and powers of the Three Elven Rings (LOTR Books), Tom Bombadil (LOTR books), Goldberry (LOTR books), Istar | Istari (LOTR books), Original non-binary character (LOTR Books), Original female character (LOTR Books), Any or No Characters (LOTR Books), Aragorn | Estel (LOTR Books), Elrond Peredhel (LotR books), Fanfiction, In-Universe Meta
DNW: A/B/O, noncon/dubcon, underage, Bechdel fails, complete villainization of the Haradrim/Variags/Easterlings, characterization of Elrond (if you write him) according to the movies rather than the books.
General likes: Depiction of female and nonbinary characters, characters of color.
I've listed optional requests for each of the tags below, but feel free to combine tags, use some of these ideas as a jumping-off point and discard others, or message me on anon with asks/clarifications/details (cherepashkadrabbles on tumblr).
Eastern Middle-earth: So underexplored in the books, so I'd love to see anything fleshing out social structures, cultures, and inter-society dynamics. Who were the first people to start training mûmakil? What are the different kinds of eastern cuisines (perhaps a certain Took might write a food travelogue)? How did trade routes to the west get established, and then perhaps disrupted by Sauron? Bonus points for matrilineal families, landscapes that aren't European deciduous forest (give me some deserts! grasslands! jungles! terraced mountainside rice paddies! high-precipitation hill country!), non-monarchial political systems, and folktales.
The Ring War in Eastern and Southern Middle-earth: How do the societies of eastern and southern Middle-earth deal with the choice between opposing Sauron and supporting him? Conflicts between Sauron cultists and resistance movements? How does Sauron exploit existing social hierarchies and inter-culture animosity (if those exist) to his own advantage? Is he a conqueror? A colonizer coopting the top of society? Is he viewed as a god? Do the Istari play a role? The Blue Wizards basically drop into obscurity in canon, but do they resurface as key players in the East or South? Presumably there are battles against Sauron going on in the south and east as well – would love to see something about tactics and strategy in very different landscapes than those of western Middle-earth.
Harad After the Fall of Sauron: Would love to see something about Harad rebuilding after Sauron's defeat, and political conflicts between those who had supported him and those who resisted/opposed him. What mechanisms for regime change and transitional justice does Harad end up adopting – lustration? truth and reconciliation proceedings? complete restructuring of civic/political institutions? Would also love to see something with Haradrim refugees establishing themselves in Gondor – how do they deal with the challenges of anti-Harad sentiment among Gondorians, assimilation pressure vs. efforts to preserve their own traditions, etc.? Bonus points for POV Haradrim characters.
Dwarf Culture: Would especially love to see something about non-Erebor/Khazad-dûm/Ered Luin Dwarves. What cultural traditions characterize the Dwarves of the East? Give me some Stiffbeards and Blacklocks and Stonefoots (Stonefeet?)! Dwarves of the Orocarni! Presumably they still speak Khuzdul, but culturally they may be quite different from the Longbeards and Broadbeams. Different crafting techniques? Different theories about their origins? Different philosophies about Mahal and the Valar? Different approaches to interacting with Men and Elves and now Hobbits?
Nature spirits in Middle-earth: I'd love to see something about spirits tied to the land who might have very different priorities and moral philosophies than Elves and Mortals do. Something exploring the motivations of those Ainur who neither retreated to Aman nor followed Morgoth would be really cool – how does being bound up with/in/to a specific place work? Do these spirits regularly interact with incarnate beings? Do they attract houseless Elven fëar? I like the idea that Elf-Ainu relationships (and possibly Mortal-Ainu relationships) are substantially more frequent than canon suggests. (Possibly Goldberry is the child of such a relationship.)
The nature and powers of the Three Elven Rings: These are depicted as holding protective/defensive magic and eventually becoming quite tied to the land they protect (at least Vilya and Nenya are). How are they used in the construction and defense of Imladris and Lothlorien? Would love to see the conversation between Círdan and Gandalf where Gandalf acquires Narya. The rings are also supposed to help the wearer resist the weariness that comes with time – how does that work? What magic are the rings capable of? Can they be used in combination with other magical artifacts (e.g. Galadriel's Mirror)? Can they be used in aid of craft? Bonus points for: Elrond getting hugs, Galadriel being sneaky and badass, Círdan and Gandalf snarking at each other.
Thanks for writing, worldbuilder!
