worldbuildingmod: The Nebra Sky Disc (nebra)
[personal profile] worldbuildingmod
I have now dealt with all remaining queries to the best of my ability and run a variety of checks, so I am optimistic that the tag set is now in something very close to its final form. However, extra eyes on these things are always helpful and so I would be grateful if, in the day between this post and sign ups opening, any participants who are willing to spare the time could check through to see if their own nominations have made it through unscathed*, or indeed whether there are any issues in other fandoms they're familiar with.

*Note that just looking at your nominations page is not a 100% guarantee -- a tag will still appear "approved" with the green tick, even if I ended up having to delete it on the back end to fix a problem. I only ever do this with the intention of immediately re-adding it in the fixed form, but it is always possible that this final stage went wrong in some cases. Please do check the tag set itself.

Things that are helpful for me to know about

  • Tags which are appearing in the wrong fandoms (when they also appear in the correct fandom, this is often referred to as "wandering" or "migrating") - I have already checked through for these twice (the fix for these is to slightly change the tag, which is why some characters have had their disambiguations changed from how they were nominated), but some may remain
  • Tags which are misspelt (I do try to double check as I approve but it's impossible to catch everything and on some occasions I even introduce typos when fixing some other issue)
  • Tags which are effectively the same as each other (e.g. if a character goes by two names and both are nominated) - my guiding principle here is to always try to improve the quality of matching. If there is a distinction between two versions of something (even if it's a subtle one) I will probably leave them separate to help people match more specifically. But if the two tags are effectively synonymous I will merge them so that participants can't "miss" each other because one offered Version A and the other requested Version B of the exact same thing that they would both have been happy to match on.
  • Tags which make no sense, e.g. if there is nothing within canon that fits the description of a worldbuilding tag (again, I try to check as I approve but obviously I don't know every fandom so some things may sneak through)
  • Special request for Tolkien fans - it turns out that the canonical "The Book of Lost Tales - J. R. R. Tolkien" tag is a direct synonym for the canonical "The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien" tag on the AO3 backend. As a result, all the tags nominated for both fandoms were appearing under Silm in the tag set while the Book of Lost Tales tag appeared empty. To fix this, I have created a new "Book of Lost Tales - Tolkien" fandom (i.e. without the "J. R. R."); however, since this is not a canonical tag it appears in the "Uncategorized Fandoms" section of the tag set. I would be very grateful if the nominators, or anyone else Tolkien-knowledgeable, could give particular attention to whether I have successfully separated the tags back out again.

Things that I don't need to know about at this stage

  • Inconsistent capitalisation, etc. - once a tag has been entered anywhere on AO3 everyone is stuck with the capitalisation scheme of the person who first used it (e.g. if "joe bloggs" has ever been used, you can type "Joe Bloggs" as many times as you want, AO3 will keep turning it into the lapslock version).
  • Inconsistent disambiguations - I have done my best to unite different nominators' different versions under one umbrella but I'm certain I have missed some and as long as the tags aren't migrating it won't affect sign ups. (In fact, most inconsistent disambiguations arise as the result of fixing migrating tags.)
  • Fandoms in the wrong categories - canonical fandom tags are all assigned to one or more categories by the tag wranglers and so this is completely outside the control of tag set maintainers. Non-canonical fandom tags all end up in "Uncategorized Fandoms" - do note that for worldbuildingex, more fandoms end up in this section of the tag set than in most other exchanges, because of the use of fandom names to specify the scope of material for worldbuilding to be extrapolated from.

Currently everything is on course for sign ups to open on time at 0755 UTC on Friday 14th January.

Please use this post only for responses to these specific queries.

For anything else, please use the previous post
or the clean up post (coming on Thursday).

Thank you to everyone who has nominated; the tag set is now approaching the final stages of being ready for sign ups. This is the final queries post; as such, as well as explaining my remaining queries, I will indicate the actions I intend to take if I don't get responses before I proceed to the final clean up stages. I will leave things until 0700 UTC on Thursday 13th (countdown) before taking action without hearing from the nominator; however, things will run more smoothly if I'm not dealing with all of these at that point, so please do reply even if it's to indicate that my proposed action is fine.

How to link to your nominations

In a few cases below, I indicate that it would be helpful for nominators to link me to their nominations page (and in general it is never unhelpful). Only I as the mod and you as the account holder have access to this page, and it does not allow me to identify you by username, only see that one nomination slate for the WBEx 2022 tag set. You can find it by clicking on "My Nominations" at the top of the tag set, which will lead you to a page with a URL in the format "https://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/9319/nominations/XXXXXX" where XXXXXX is a string of numbers - it is this URL which I will need.

Specific queries )

Finally

At this point, to the best of my knowledge and belief all tags that I have not mentioned above have either been approved or (very rarely) rejected. If you think your tags have been approved but they appear to have since disappeared from the tag set completely please let me know, ideally also with a link to your nominations page so I can reconstruct them if necessary. (On one occasion out of hundreds AO3 did give me an unusual error message that might just have resulted in some tags disappearing, though I suspect it was just the result of accidentally double clicking and so the tags will have gone through the first time.) Having said that, please do check the "Unassociated Characters and Relationships" section at the very bottom for any tags that appear to be missing; there are a number of tags in there which did not get automatically associated and which I will be rescuing as part of general clean up later on - they are not a concern, only tags that cannot be found anywhere.

Here is the tag set in what I hope is very close to its final form. I have dealt with the remaining queries (apart from one possible adjustment to a Harry Potter tag that I am still consulting with the nominator about) and done some preliminary clean up. Sign ups will open at 0755 UTC on Friday, at which point I will stop adjusting the tag set, and so any errors that remain at that stage will not be corrected.

Getting involved with tag set clean up is very much not compulsory but if you want to help, then:

  • For your own nominations, please check that they have made it through intact. (The tag set did occasionally throw errors instead of acknowledging the approvals; I believe all the tags did make it through, but can't be 100% sure. It's also possible that I've introduced errors when adding disambiguations, etc.)
  • For other fandoms you know, please check things like spellings of character names, whether the same character is in twice under different names, etc.
  • For the tag set in general, I believe that I have found and pinned down all the wandering tags (if you find any of your disambigs have got more long-winded, this is why!) but if you do spot any that have broken loose again, do say.

In general, I will not at this point be trying to consolidate tags that are similar but do have some sort of distinction between them. However, if, on seeing the completed tag set, you decide that you want to move your own nominations to a different fandom tag (eg from one OW category to another, or one subset of a large fandom to a slightly different one), please say so here, providing a link to your nominations page to verify that they are your noms.

Very belatedly, here is the tag set formatted into a spreadsheet on Google Sheets, in case it is helpful.

While making it, I noticed a few things that I would have fixed if sign ups weren't already live; the only one that rises beyond the level of typo and formatting corrections is that in The Goblin Emperor - Katherine Addison, there are two separate "Original Character(s)" tags with different disambiguations. Do watch out for this if you're signing up for that fandom and intending to request/offer OCs - if you have enough slots, it's probably best to use both to minimise the chances of missing a potential match.

ETA:

I believe the issue referred to below should now be fixed; however, I'm going to leave this up just in case it causes any lingering weirdness.

Original post below:

I have just discovered that a very small number of worldbuilding tags have actually ended up in the "character" slot. Since this could cause difficulties for people signing up (e.g. if the only worldbuilding tag they were interested in was one of these, they wouldn't have anything to put in the "Relationship" field), and so far none of them have been specifically offered or requested, I am going to fix this on the backend (though this will require me to reword the tags at least slightly, since they are now recognised by AO3 as "character" tags in their current form; I will mostly try to achieve this by using different disambiguations).

The affected fandoms are:

  • Discworld - Terry Pratchett
  • IT (Movies - Muschietti)
  • Stranger Things (TV 2016)

If you are in the process of signing up for these fandoms and happen to see this, please wait until I edit to say I've finished. (Should only be a few minutes.)

If you missed this notice, and I changed the tag set under your sign up form, or you encounter any difficulties relating to these changes, please let me know and I'll figure out how we can deal with them.

The tag set is here in what I hope is (at least very close to) its final form. (For those keeping score, this round we have broken through the 300 fandoms and 2000 character tags barriers; the previous largest tag set was the one for Round 2 in 2018.)

Over the next 24 hours, please do peruse the tag set and check for any errors that may have crept in, whether spelling mistakes, incorrectly associated fandoms or anything else. I will be making final corrections shortly before sign ups open, tomorrow (Friday 17th) at 1655 UTC.

I believe that at this stage I have made all corrections that have already been notified to me, or that I have spotted myself as being needed (including, I'm really hoping, any migrating tags - note that a few tags have had minor changes to their disambiguations to stop them wandering from one fandom to another). If you notice that something you've told me about isn't fixed, please do tell me again, as this means that either it accidentally fell off my to-do list somewhere along the line, or the fix failed to take on AO3.

I will be endeavouring to create a more human-readable spreadsheet version of the tag set to help with sign ups, as in previous years, but this will be very dependent on how much free time I get over the next day or two.

Sign ups are on course to open on time at 2155 UTC (or possibly somewhat earlier, depending on whether the "flexibility" in my work day today ends up working in my favour or that of my employer).

Tag set

The tag set is now in what I hope is very close to its final form. Thanks to everyone who has helped with spotting issues; if there any further corrections, please do let me know, but I will not be making further amendments to the tag set once sign ups are open.

Please note that because of the way worldbuildingex uses fandom names to specify the scope of the canon under consideration, a significant number of popular fandoms are hiding in the "Uncategorized Fandoms" section (e.g. all three variations on Harry Potter).

I have now made a spreadsheet of all the tags, sorted alphabetically by fandom name and separated into character and worldbuilding tags. I hope that this will be a little easier to navigate than the AO3 tag set interface itself; in particular, I have subdivided the nominations for Original Work (by some margin the largest section) using the different genres suggested by some of the tags. However, in the event of any discrepancies between the spreadsheet and the AO3 version, AO3 takes priority, as it is the AO3 tag set proper that sign ups and matching will work on.

Rules amendment

When I expanded the list of examples of "bad faith" exchange participation before the start of this round, I included for the first time not abiding by the widely held (but often unwritten) expectation that participants will comment on their gifts, as an example of a relatively low level issue (relative to deleting gifts before reveals, etc.).

I have decided that it would be better to have clarity on this, so I have amended the rules post for this round. The line "When works are revealed, please do comment on your gift(s) to thank the creator." has been replaced with:

  • You should acknowledge the gift(s) you have received. Ideally, this will be via commenting to thank the creator for their efforts. However, contacting the mod to raise an issue, or using AO3's built in "Refuse Gift" functionality, will also be considered as acknowledgement of your gift. Failure to acknowledge your gift(s) by one of these methods will result in a ban from participating in subsequent rounds of the exchange.

Please note that I will not be applying this rule retrospectively - i.e., everyone is free to sign up for this round, whatever their previous commenting history. However, failure to acknowledge your gift(s) this round may impact on your ability to participate in subsequent rounds. (Having said that I won't apply it retrospectively, I might, at my discretion, decide to take into account a good commenting history from Rounds 1 and 2 as a mitigating factor, depending on the circumstances.)

While we're on rules, and since someone on FFA was asking: well-behaved sockpuppet accounts are fine. However, I would note that in 90%+ of cases, "well-behaved" would probably amount to "undetectable".

The tag set is now closed for nominations. Just in case anyone was literally just about to submit and got caught out, I will grant a 15-minute amnesty - comment on this post before 2210 UTC with the tags that didn't make it and I will add them manually. ETA: amnesty window now closed.

Clean up

Once any last minute tags have been dealt with, I will move into tag set clean up mode.

Please check your own nominations (and, if you're feeling especially helpful, any other fandoms in the tag set you know) for issues such as misspellings, inconsistencies, etc. If you find any, please comment here to let me know. As in previous years, I intend to create a spreadsheet version of the tag set which might be a bit easier to navigate; in the process, I should be able to spot issues like: duplicated tags (either migrated between fandoms or lingering ones from the batch of tags that got doubled up between fandoms); fandoms with missing default character tags; fandoms with inconsistent/missing disambiguations; etc. However, feel free you're welcome to point those out as well so I can get ahead.

Assuming no unexpected hiccups in sorting out the tag set, sign ups should open on time at 2155 UTC on Friday 18th (and may possibly start a little earlier than that if the stars align).

ETA: You may spot a few tags with extra bits of disambiguation that might seem unnecessary - this is because the original versions of those tags were "wandering" (appearing in fandoms they shouldn't) and changing them to the new versions prevented this.

Rejections and Adjustments

For the record, the following were rejected since the last post:
  • White Collar and X-Men - All Media Types and all character tags under them, because neither fandom had worldbuilding tags nominated
  • The Reluctant Widow - Georgette Heyer and all character tags under it, because no evidence was submitted for the only worldbuilding tag after several requests (there were also no default character tags)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (Movies) because the relevant tags were folded into the main TNG fandom, per discussion with the nominator
  • Malcolm Reed under Star Trek: Discovery as I can't find any convincing evidence for assuming he would still be alive by the time of the Discovery series

and the following tags have been adjusted, either following earlier discussion or because they were nominated within the last 24 hours and I made a judgement call:
  • In Chrono Trigger, WB: Janus' early life especially with his magic differing (Chrono Trigger) has been replaced with WB: Life in Zeal (Chrono Trigger) and WB: post-game quest to rescue Crono's mother and/or the cats (Chrono Trigger) has been replaced with WB: Ripple effects from the defeat of Lavos (Chrono Trigger) (per here)
  • In The Last Witch Hunter (2015), I've turned WB: Magical levels (Last Witch Hunter) into a more general WB: Magic (Last Witch Hunter) tag as I can't find any evidence for a specific idea of "levels" in this canon's treatment of magic when searching online

Can be found here.

On the spreadsheet, fandoms are listed alphabetically (tags within fandoms almost always alphabetical, but there were a few that behaved oddly). I have posted a few pointers about where to look in certain cases where it occurred to me; suggestions for additions to these are welcome if I missed links between fandoms etc.

If there are discrepancies between the spreadsheet and the AO3 tag set, the AO3 version is the one to use. If any mistakes do remain in the tag set at this stage, we will have to live with them.

Backup plans: Dreamwidth seems to be fully back in action after the spate of 504s the other day, but in the event of a more sustained outage, I will switch to using the exchange tumblr, which is currently used for promotional announcements rather than detailed communications. You may wish to make sure you have it bookmarked.

Queries arising from tag set clean up will be posted here; please keep an eye on this post as it may be edited over the clean up period.

Harry Potter (Books 1-7)

Orion Black - it's been pointed out (correctly, as far as I can see) that Sirius Black's father isn't named within the books themselves. Was this nom intended for the Wizarding World (with Pottermore) tag? My inclination if I don't hear anything is to rename the tag in the books-only fandom as "Sirius Black's father", and add "Orion Black" to Wizarding World.

WB: Political Workings of the Wizengamot - this tag is fine, but there is possible ambiguity over its scope. The Wizengamot is portrayed in the books as the wizarding world's judiciary, although it clearly does have internal politics since we see members make resignations on points of principle. However, in other sources/fan interpretations, its role is wider. This is probably one to keep an eye on the requests for if you're planning to offer it.

EDIT: Please see this post for clarification requests. Tags with unclear validity may be deleted before sign ups open.

The tag set is now closed, with 272 fandoms, 1877 characters (1333 excluding the defaults) and 1573 worldbuilding tags.

I have gone with my best guess on the few remaining clarifications, and I believe I have dealt with any clean up issues that people have pointed out as we went along. (If I have missed something you have already told me about, please point it out again here.)

We now move into the clean up phase proper. For fandoms you nominated/are interested in offering or requesting/know, it would be really helpful if you could check for:

  • Spelling errors etc.
  • Redundant tags - e.g. this character is the same as that character under another name; these two worldbuilding tags are synonymous
  • Validity - i.e. is there at least something in canon for this to be extrapolated from? (I have been checking that tags in fandoms I don't know personally seem sensible, mostly on wikia.com, but a few things may have slipped past me)
  • Undisambiguated tags - i.e. ones that are missing "(Fandom)" after them. This isn't essential but it'd be nice for everything to be consistent.
  • Missing tags - in the sense that you know you nominated it but now can't find it, or an equivalent I have merged it with. I hope there aren't any, but there were several occasions where the archive gave me an error message after approving tags and while I think they all made it through, I can't be 100% sure. If you do have this situation, providing a link to your nominations page would be very helpful.

Do feel free to let me know if you happen to spot any wandering tags, but please don't go to extra effort to search for them specifically, as I will be looking for them alongside creating the spreadsheet version of the tag set.

Speaking of wandering tags, I intend to deal with these by adding a "#" between the tag and the disambiguation; the extra character can be safely ignored on the participant end, it's just to make the tags stay put in the fandoms they're supposed to be in.

I will be accepting corrections and queries for the next 48 hours or so, after which I will be moving to finalise the tag set and get ready to open sign ups.

The tag set is now in its final form, for better or worse; if there are any remaining mistakes, I am afraid we will be stuck with them. Thanks to everyone who contributed corrections, especially the eagle-eyed Morbane.

Three Marvel characters decided to take a wander through the tag set, as is customary: Maria Hill, Tony Stark, and Scott Summers. To keep them in the right places, you will find that they have gained some repetitive extra bits to their tags; these can be ignored from the point of view of using them for your requests/offers.

I have turned the tag set into a Google docs spreadsheet here. This may be more useful but may also contain mistakes; in the event of discrepancies, the tag set on AO3 should be taken as definitive because that's what sign ups and matching will be working on. If anyone has suggestions for improving the presentation/useability of the spreadsheet, I am open to them (or if anyone wants to make a nicer version, I will happily link to that instead).

For those who are interested, the final count is 233 fandoms, 1677 characters (so 1211 characters outside "No" and "Original") and a whopping 1463 worldbuilding tags.

Sign ups will open very shortly.

ETA: Don't forget to check the Uncategorized Fandom section. All of Harry Potter and Middle Earth are in there, along with quite a bit of Star Wars. And many other fine fandoms.
