(Note: this guide is intended for those who have not nominated before. If you have successfully nominated in previous rounds, you do not need to read this.)

Step-by-step instructions with screenshots

  • Go to the tag set here; you should see a screen like the below (once tags start to be approved, there will be much more to see in the bottom section) - click on "Nominate" in the top right corner.
The Worldbuilding Exchange 2021 tag set, with "Nominate" in the top right corner highlighted.

You will be taken to the nominating screen, which looks like this:
Introductory text on the AO3 nominations screen, with "Ignore this" appended to the instruction to choose a canonical tag if it exists.

(Important note: The line at the top which says "The autocomplete lists canonical tags for you. Please choose the canonical version of your tag if there is one." is a standard piece of AO3 boilerplate which cannot be changed. It does not apply in this case - the vast majority of worldbuildingex tags are not AO3 canonicals, and even where canonicals exist they probably aren't formatted correctly for worldbuildingex purposes. Please ignore this.)

  • Decide on a fandom you want to nominate and enter it in the "Fandom" line. The name you use for the fandom should make clear what scope of material you want to be considered for extrapolating worldbuilding from. It is perfectly fine in worldbuildingex for fandoms to "overlap" with each other if they represent different subsets of canon material. (Star Wars is a good example here - the movies taken without any other material, the old "Legends" material, and the new Expanded Universe might all lead to quite different takes on the same ideas.) A fandom name that is appropriate for the worldbuildingex tag set may well not be the same as the AO3 canonical that you would usually use for the fandom.

  • For each fandom, you have 7 "Character" slots and 5 "Relationship" slots. Please ensure that you disambiguate all tags (add the name of the fandom in brackets afterwards - it's OK to abbreviate as long as it's clear).

  • For the "Character" slots, you can nominate characters as you would normally in other exchanges, but there are also some tags which are more specific to worldbuildingex. Every fandom needs to have "Original Character(s) (Name of Fandom)" and "Any or No Characters (Name of Fandom)" nominated, so please use two of the slots for that unless you can see that they have already been approved previously, or are co-ordinating nominations with someone else you are sure is going to nominate those tags. You can also nominate specific types of character, either as "Any [Type of Character](s) (Name of Fandom)" or "Original [Type of Character](s) (Name of Fandom)". The first of these includes canon characters, the latter is restricted to OCs described by that type.

  • In worldbuildingex, the "Relationship" slots are not used for relationships, but instead for worldbuilding tags. Worldbuilding tags are all prefaced with "WB:" and describe something that you are interested in receiving/creating fanworks exploring. (If you want inspiration, taking a look at previous rounds' tag sets could be a good idea - it's perfectly fine to nominate tags exactly as they appear in past tag sets, even if you aren't the person who originally came up with them.) Like character tags, worldbuilding tags also need to be disambiguated with the name of the fandom.

For example, a relatively small but valid nomination slate for a fandom might look like this:
An example set of nominations for a generic "Action-Adventure TV Show", with the following "Character" tags: Original Character(s) (AATVS), Any or No Characters (AATVS), Hotheaded Hero (AATVS), Brainy Boffin (AATVS) and Aloof AI (AATVS); and the following "Relationship" (worldbuilding) tags: "WB: Origin of the McGuffins (AATVS)", "WB: Ethical standards applied to AI-human relationships (AATVS)"

  • You can repeat for up to five fandoms, but you don't have to use all five. You also don't have to use all of the "Character" and "Relationship" slots within a fandom, although fandoms won't be approved unless they have the two "default" character tags ("Original..." and "Any or No...") and at least one relevant worldbuilding tag. You can edit your nominations later to add further tags, if you wish, or change existing ones if they have not yet been approved. Please check before hitting "Submit" that your character tags are in the Character fields, and your worldbuilding tags are in the Relationship fields - unfortunately, the approvals screen gives me no guaranteed way to verify this before approving and if they are in the wrong ones fixing it later is rather fiddly.
The bottom of the tag set nomination interface, with the Submit button highlighted.
