Oh, why not? Everything's ready to go ...

Sign ups are now open!

Here is the tag set on AO3 and as a spreadsheet. In the event of any discrepancies that have crept in between the two, the AO3 version should be taken as authoritative.

Don't forget that because of the way fandoms are defined for this exchange, many are classified under "Uncategorized Fandoms" on the AO3 tag set interface.

Some key points about signing up:

  • Requests: 3-10 You can use more than one slot for the same fandom, but there must be at least three different ones overall. (In terms of fandom tags in the tag set. It's OK if they're different versions of the same canon.)
  • Offers: 4-10 As for requests, you can use more than one slot for the same fandom, as long as there are four different fandoms overall.
  • For each request and offer, you have 8 character slots and 8 worldbuilding slots (in the "Relationship" section), and you can request/offer one, two or all three of the "Fanfiction", "Fanart" and "In-Universe Meta" freeforms.
  • The "Any" tickbox is disabled for requests (but remember that you can use multiple slots for the same fandom), but it is enabled for offers. Please make sure you are confident about creating for any tag in the tag set for that fandom if you are using it. (Please note that this is not quite the same as a "bucket offer" as found in Yuletide and some other exchanges, in that you can't add additional tags to represent further fandoms you are happy to offer Any for.)
  • OR Matching You are only guaranteed to match on one character and one worldbuilding tag, in one fandom. Your requests should not rely on the idea that people have signed up to create for all your requested tags. Your offers should all be for things that you would be happy to create for even if that's the only tag you matched on.
  • "Any or No Characters" is used to indicate a willingness to receive/create works where the focus is on the worldbuilding to the point that which, if any characters appear is secondary. This is not the same meaning of "Any" as the AO3 tickbox (where it means "any tag in the tag set"). Requesting the tag means you are open to receiving any canon character, any character implied to exist by canon, any original character dreamt up by your creator, or no characters at all. (It is OK to DNW characters you don't want to appear if using this tag.)
  • Requests will be visible throughout sign ups.
  • DNWs Do Not Wants (DNWs) will only be enforced if they are in the Optional Details box on the AO3 sign up form. As a creator, you should avoid including your recipient's DNWs in the work you create for them. However, please do not use your DNWs in an overly restrictive way to box your creator into a corner.
  • ODAO With the exception of DNWs, the principle of ODAO - Optional Details Are Optional - applies. This means both that you do not have to provide them at all if you don't want to, but also that your creator is not obligated to follow any that you do provide.
  • Some tags may not autocomplete as you enter them, but they will still work if you cut and paste them from the tag set. This is a known AO3 bug of long standing.
  • Don't worry about the "#"s found in a very small number of character tags, these were just added to fix tag migration issues.
  • ETA: Harry Potter For some reason, the drop down menus allow you to pick the "Any or No ..." and "Original Character(s)" tags for either "Harry Potter - Wizarding World" or "Harry Potter - Wizarding World (No Pottermore)" in both of those fandoms, and it is possible to complete a sign up with the wrong ones in there. Please check the tags very carefully if you are requesting/offering in those fandoms. Thank you.

If you have any concerns or queries that the above list doesn't help with, or encounter any difficulties in the sign up process, please do ask, either by commenting here, or if you prefer to do it privately via email to worldbuildingmod@gmx.com or using the DW messaging system.

The letters post and an opt-in post for other media (podfic/vids/IF) will follow some time in the next 24 hours.

Thanks to everyone who has signed up!

There is just one participant who has come out of the initial stages of the matching process without any potential recipients. I have sent the individual concerned an email to the address they have registered with AO3 with some suggestions of how we can proceed; please respond within 24 hours, or I will (very sadly) be forced to delete your sign up in order to allow things to proceed.

Once I hear back from this individual, or after 24 hours have elapsed with no contact, I'll go ahead and generate assignments, initial pinch hits, etc. so watch out for something in the next 24-48 hours.

If you are still in the process of signing up, please reply to this post or ping me an email at worldbuildingmod@gmx.com with your AO3 username so I can keep an eye out for your sign up appearing. I can't hold the door open indefinitely but I will do my best to provide a little bit of wiggle room.

If you are still signing up, and you're aiming to provide detailed prompts*, then for what it's worth I would quite strongly suggest that to be sure of making it in time, you go down the route of linking to a placeholder letter and cut and pasting brief details of your strong DNWs into the Optional Details boxes, and then update the letter later.

*please note that prompts are not compulsory - Optional Details Are Optional applies in all directions, and in this exchange in particular many of the worldbuilding tags are essentially prompts by themselves

The tag set is now in its final form, for better or worse; if there are any remaining mistakes, I am afraid we will be stuck with them. Thanks to everyone who contributed corrections, especially the eagle-eyed Morbane.

Three Marvel characters decided to take a wander through the tag set, as is customary: Maria Hill, Tony Stark, and Scott Summers. To keep them in the right places, you will find that they have gained some repetitive extra bits to their tags; these can be ignored from the point of view of using them for your requests/offers.

I have turned the tag set into a Google docs spreadsheet here. This may be more useful but may also contain mistakes; in the event of discrepancies, the tag set on AO3 should be taken as definitive because that's what sign ups and matching will be working on. If anyone has suggestions for improving the presentation/useability of the spreadsheet, I am open to them (or if anyone wants to make a nicer version, I will happily link to that instead).

For those who are interested, the final count is 233 fandoms, 1677 characters (so 1211 characters outside "No" and "Original") and a whopping 1463 worldbuilding tags.

Sign ups will open very shortly.

ETA: Don't forget to check the Uncategorized Fandom section. All of Harry Potter and Middle Earth are in there, along with quite a bit of Star Wars. And many other fine fandoms.

The updated version of the rules says:

The “No Characters” tag in a prompt means that the requester is leaving the use of characters up to their creator. It does not prohibit a creator from using characters.

Including "No Characters" in the tag set for each fandom is designed to improve the chances of people matching to other people who want to receive/create the type of works they themselves are interested in, since some types of worldbuilding fanworks do not include characters in the traditional sense, or at least do not focus on them.

Here's how this will work in practice:

No Characters and Requests )
No Characters and Offers )
