Original Works

There don't seem to have been any objections to the idea of splitting up OW into smaller subfandoms, so we'll proceed on that basis. I'm going to leave it a further 24 hours to allow people to adjust their noms. If you want to co-ordinate with each other, feel free, but when I start approving I'll be doing it on the same "overlapping fandoms are fine" basis as other fandoms.* However, I won't be approving the umbrella "Original Work" canonical tag.

Please note that once I do start approving, these fandoms will show up in the "Uncategorized Fandoms" section of the tag set.

*I am willing to fold nominations into each other once they're approved, if the request comes from the person who nominated the tags to be moved. So "I saw someone else nominated Original Work - X and I'd like my tags to move there from Original Work - Y" I will action, but "I nominated Original Work - Y and I really think the Original Work - X tags someone else nominated should go in there too", I will not.

(For anyone wondering about other tags, I'm afraid I haven't had anywhere near as much time for tackling the tag set today as I'd hoped, but I still wanted to post this since there's been a fair bit of discussion on the previous post. I do have a definite chunk of free time avaliable tomorrow and am going to make some serious inroads into the remaining tags then.)

it sounds like I want to rename one of my nom sets to something that isn't Original Works - Low Fantasy but I don't know what I ought to call the thing I'm looking for. what I said the other day is

What I mean by "low fantasy" is something historical or contemporary with some small but significant fantastic elements in; in a city setting, confusion with "urban fantasy" is kind of to be expected. I would expect "high fantasy" to have far more prominent fantastic elements, and likely to involve a created world instead of what purports to be, or is very obviously modeled on, our own. (And while I do like both, if I were expecting the former, I would definitely be annoyed to receive the latter!)

I've been researching this since seeing the debate on the other post, and it seems to me that while there's an at least very roughly agreed definition of "High Fantasy", what constitutes the opposite of it to be "Low Fantasy" is defined in different ways by different people, so I think it probably would be better to give it another name. It seems to me that the distinction you're making is between "secondary world" and "real world with fantastic elements", but I'm afraid I can't think of a particularly concise way of expressing the latter.
