worldbuildingmod: Detail from Carta Marina showing Thule and sea monsters (Default)
[personal profile] worldbuildingmod posting in [community profile] worldbuildingex
Nominations are now open here. Full nominations information is available in this section of this round's rules post; this post is intended to summarise the most important points, particularly where there are differences from what is typical in most other exchanges.

You can nominate up to five fandoms, with seven character slots and five "worldbuilding" slots (using the AO3 relationship fields) for each.

Fandom names used should make it clear what the scope of the source material intended is. This may mean using AO3 non-canonicals. It is OK in this exchange for nominated fandoms to overlap in whole or in part (e.g. "Star Wars - Movies Only", "Star Wars - Legends", "Star Wars - New EU" would have some elements in common and others not). Crossovers are OK if and only if the crossover happened in canon; in this case, nominate under both fandoms, divided by a / (e.g. "How To Get Away With Murder/Scandal").

Please do:
  • disambiguate all tags with the name of the fandom (please ignore the instructions on the nomination page itself to choose AO3 canonicals - these only occasionally have the disambiguations; unfortunately, this is standard AO3 text that I can't override)
  • nominate the two "default" character tags used in the exchange -- "Original Character(s) (name of fandom)" and "Any or No Characters (name of fandom)" -- in each fandom you nominate
  • preface all worldbuilding tags with "WB: "
  • double check that your character tags are in character fields and your worldbuilding tags are in relationship fields (on the approval interface, I have no way to see which tags were nominated as which)
  • be patient while waiting for your tags to be approved*

Please don't:
  • nominate actual relationships (e.g. A/B, C&D) in the Relationship fields
  • nominate RPF, or worldbuilding tags for close-to-real-world canons that would similarly constitute solely RL research with no use of creativity to answer the questions
  • nominate AU ideas, unless the AU in question appears within the canon
  • nominate fandoms without at least one worldbuilding tag

This post doubles as an evidence post and a brainstorming post. Feel free to comment here to provide extra information you think may help me deal with your nominations, or to discuss with other fans how best to organise your shared fandoms.

I will post clarifications posts regularly during the tag set sorting period; please keep an eye on the comm to see if any of your tags appear with issues or queries.

*Please note that I will be changing how I approach the tag set behind the scenes (in particular, I am trying to build the spreadsheet as I go), which means that it is likely there will be a slightly longer wait for your tags to be approved compared to previous years.

Nominations will close at 1655 UTC on Wednesday 15th January (countdown).

Dreaming of Sunshine eligibility

Hi! I'd like to nominate the fandom Dreaming of Sunshine by Silver Queen but it's a fanfiction for which we'd be creating recursive works, so I wanted to check that that was okay before trying to nominate. Some relevant information:

  • We've got permission from Silver Queen to write fic of her fic! See here.
  • Dreaming of Sunshine is a 700k Naruto fanfiction that was started in 2011. There are over over 300 DoS fics on AO3. We're a community! We have our own fandom events and have also been participating in other multifandom exchanges.
  • Most importantly for this exchange, Dreaming of Sunshine has its own extensive worldbuilding. It explores magic systems, the organization and logistics of the primary location, foreign and domestic politics, socio-economic divides, the implications of Naruto filler/one-off movies/video games, and a bunch of other stuff in ways Naruto does not. It has a day-by-day calendar that our recursive works usually stick to.
  • When it comes to WB tags, there are things I'd love to nominate for DoS that straight up have little to no basis in Naruto canon. For example, Dreaming of Sunshine has recently introduced a new Police Department to the primary location as well as a significant number of educational reforms.
  • For purposes of character matching, a vast majority of characters in Naruto are so different from their DoS counterparts that requesting them with the same tags doesn't feel right. Eg, "Haku (Naruto)" and "Momochi Zabuza (Naruto)" would be characters who died early in Naruto canon as mercenaries who took jobs outside of the established military system, while "Haku (DoS)" and "Momochi Zabuza (DoS)" would be characters who survived and went on to participate in a successful revolution in their country of origin which has given them stability, political power, and other wildly different circumstances. The revolution happened in both Naruto and Dreaming of Sunshine, but the way one would worldbuild about it with these two characters would obviously be very different depending on which fandom one was writing for.

In addition to just wanting to make sure it's okay for us to nominate in this fandom, "Dreaming of Sunshine - Silver Queen" is synned to "Naruto" so we'll need to pick a different tag to nominate under unless you want to associate everything directly behind the scenes /o\ "Dreaming of Sunshine - Silver Queen (fanfic)" and several other version have been used previously.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Amalgam & Warp World

I have the same question for both of these worlds. Amalgam is a world that merged DC and Marvel into one. Warp World is one where the population is halved by having half the population merged with the other half.

Can I nominate theoretical characters where we don't know who the character was merged with? Either with the other half being specified in the nomination or up to the writer?

For Amalgam specifically, can I nominate theoretical merged events from Marvel and DC?

For "WB: Pokemon Ghosts Who Used To Be Human (Pokemon Main Videogame)" I just want to clarify that it's part of the info on some ghost pokemon that they were definitely human once.

For King of Fighters nominations, I'd like to clarify that "King of Fighters" is the name of the real-world game series, while "The King of Fighters" is the name of the in-universe fighting tournament the games are about.

Got it! I asked about this last year and you gave permission then as well, but I wouldn't expect you to remember every question you were asked last year. Thank you for permission again!

Harry Potter Split?

I nominated some Harry Potter tags and was unsure which fandom to use. Is the fandom being split again this year? Should we use the same tags as last year, or just one catch-all fandom?

Sorry if you addressed this matter already this year, but I can’t seem to search the community other than hitting ctrl + F on every page (which I did try).

I'm voting for "split", myself, on the grounds that some people are strongly "just the first seven books + schoolbooks" and other people include various combinations of Cursed Child, Fantastic Beasts, Pottermore, JKR tweets…

I don’t have strong feelings either way, but would it be possible to split it so that Hogwarts Mystery can be included with something but not everything like JKR tweets and Pottermore? Or that could just be handled with character selection and DNWs?

For example, if we just have Harry Potter as one category, people can avoid the characters they don’t want and DNW Pottermore and JKR tweets etc. It doesn’t look like most people wanted Pottermore included last year anyway, so I’m not sure that would be a big issue. Or we could split it and have “Harry Potter Books,” “Harry Potter Visual Media” or “Harry Potter Canon” (which would include the movies and games but not Pottermore) and “Harry Potter - All Media Types” (which would include Pottermore and the like).

My very unmodly opinion is "Harry Potter - Hogwarts Mystery" as a distinct subcategory

I guess? Tbh I just want to be able to prompt for things that happen to characters like Tonks and Charlie and Snape both during the books and the years immediately before, without having to request two fandoms because I might bring in someone’s backstory for one or two prompts.

I can’t think of a better fandom name than what I have, so I’m going to leave them as they are. Thank you for your help and for modding this exchange!

Hi! Just realized another thing I should say!

In World of Warcraft I nominated 'Natasha', which is the complete and only known name for a child npc who fell to the world of warcraft world from England:

(Last night someone thought I meant Natasha from MCU as a crossover)

For the "Transformers (Aligned continuity)" fandom, I wanna clarify that Aligned covers the Transformers: Prime cartoon and it's comics, the War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games, and the Transformers: Robots In Disguise 2015 cartoon. All of them ostensibly take place in the same canon and timeline, but the existing worldbuilding is often contradictory (not to mention the wild tone swings) which is a big part of its charm for me. It's always fun to see which parts of Aligned people pull from.

Yep, that's actually why I went with "Aligned" in the first place. It's about as established as calling the Bay movies "Bayverse", and TFwiki's article on it is the first thing that comes up when you google it :D

I think Jyn Erso (Star Wars - New EU) may have wandered over from Star Wars (Movies Only)? At least, I don't see any tags that seem relevant to her in the first fandom.

Mentioned because I'm planning to nominate other related tags/characters & hoped to request her under the Movies Only fandom.

I nominated the Ink Beast Parade, which is a set of images created by Augustus Jansson as advertisements for Queen City printing ink between 1905-1908.

An article with large versions of the advertisements

Public Domain Review piece with additional images

I used labels from the images themselves (i.e. "The only heliotrope cow in the world") to label them, or if there wasn't a label, a combo of a colour used and the animal (golden yellow bear), but if you need more specifics, please let me know.

Heartstrikers & DFZ - Rachel Aaron

The Heartstrikers and DFZ are two series by Rachel Aaron. They're set several decades apart in the same world. Since the world is the same, and the worldbuilding points I nominated appear across both series, I wanted to nominate them as a group.

The Dark Crystal & Related Fandoms

They just finished airing it a few hours ago.

There are still a number of DC live action properties that aren't Arrowverse canon. I can make a list for you, but the biggest ones missing are the Dark Knight Trilogy, Watchmen, and the 70s Wonder Woman show, but there is more missing than that.

Also, a heads up that as of tonight the world that Arrow/Flash/Legends of Tomorrow/Batwoman took place on, Supergirl's Earth, and Black Lightning Earth have all been merged into a single Earth designated Earth-Prime, with massive status quo changes and complete histories altered. I don't know if you want to give a heads up to requesters only asking for a single show that they might want to specify Pre-Crisis or Post-Crisis since it's such a big change.
