Just a few things:

Middle Earth: I am fandom-adjacent enough to this to know that there are notorious issues on AO3 with characters who have different names in different languages, and it has only just occurred to me that I may be accidentally approving the same characters under different names, since we aren't using the | canonical | tags. If that has happened, let me know (and ideally please suggest a solution).

Star Wars - Movies Only: I allowed in "slicers" even though I think technically they're never called that in the movies themselves, although they're certainly implied to exist. But I'm conscious that if I wasn't in the fandom, I would have waved it through without a second thought, and it seems silly to insist on using a different name for them when one does exist.

Magical Girl Raising Project: I think this is all sorted now, but please check. A few character tags were rejected because they already existed with slightly different disambiguation.

I will be away from the computer (but still online via smartphone when I can) for the next 48 hours or so, and so unlikely to be able to do anything particularly complicated tag-set-wise; please do carry on adding tags to give me plenty to do when I get back to it at the weekend.

The tag set currently contains 110 fandoms, 749 characters and 608 worldbuilding tags! As of this post, I have dealt with everything that I don't need further input on.

Fandoms with no worldbuilding tags

Unless worldbuilding tags are added before the end of nominations, these will not be approved:

  • Dinosaur Train
  • Labyrinth (1986)
  • PAW Patrol (also, I think it should be "Mayor Goodway", not "Mayor Goodwin"?)

Magical Girl Raising Project

The nominations for this are now valid, thank you, but I have since approved a set of nominations under Magical Girl Raising Project (Anime). Can the still-unapproved nominations also go in with those tags, or are they for the manga?

Worldbuilding tags awaiting approval in approved fandoms

I am still hoping for some clarification on the "Anthonius" and "Paulinus" worldbuilding tags for Eagle of the Ninth, and I will not be approving "Friendships" for MCU as it is somewhat too broad. (The nominator mentioned having changed it but I'm afraid if you did, the change did not make it through to my end; if you tell me what you want it changed to, I can do it.)

Harry Potter

  • I rejected "(Book Series)" in favour of "(book series)" because the all-lowercase version was where all the tags were nominated.
  • I have added "Original" to some nominated character tags, mostly related to food; in the unlikely event that these characters do exist canonically and I've just forgotten about them, please tell me and I will fix it.
  • Under the Wizarding World tag, I rejected "Politics and Diplomacy" because another nominator had put in "Politics" and "International Diplomacy" as separate tags, which seems to me to be better for fine-grained matching.

Rivers of London

No one suggested that "Genius Loci" ought to be distinct from "genii locorum", and repeatedly seeing "Genius Loci" and "Ben Aaronovitch" in close proximity at the top of the list of tags to review was making me want to go and dig out my Benny Summerfield stuff, which would have been counterproductive in helping me get through the tag set, so "Genius Loci" has been rejected.

Final Fantasy IV

For consistency, I changed two character tags (Maenads and The Creator) which had been disambiguated with "(Final Fantasy IV: The After Years)" to just "(Final Fantasy IV)". It seems from Google that they are from the sequel game but for our purposes they definitely count as part of the same fandom (in that they exist in the same fictional universe and thus are affected by the same worldbuilding). If there are compelling reasons I haven't understood to change this back, let me know.

A general note on video game characters

Since I know this came up in May the 4th recently about Exile, I am intensely relaxed about multiple versions of video game player characters existing in the tag set, even if they aren't symmetrical. For example, having all of "Shepard", "Male Shepard", "Paragon Female Shepard", "Paragon Male Shepard", "Renegade Male Shepard" and "Renegade Female Shepard who Spared the Rachni Queen" in Mass Effect would not bother me at all. I will approve anything that looks plausible; it is up to you how many character slots you want to use to get the versions you want.

I found a gap in my schedule sufficient to whittle things down to displaying all the remaining fandoms on a single page, at which point I have stopped and looked for potential problems:

Rivers of London
  • I have approved a disambiguated version of "Varvara Sidornovna Tamonina", who has also been nominated with a canonical tag. Please do not be alarmed that the canonical has been rejected.
  • I have approved "Worldbuilding: genii locorum"; another nominator has also submitted "Worldbuilding: Genius Loci". I have gone with the plural as more general, but have held off rejecting the other tag for the moment, just in case there is a subtle distinction I am missing. Please let me know if there is.

Eagle of the Ninth
  • "Worldbuilding: Anthonius" and "Worldbuilding: Paulinus" have been nominated - this isn't a fandom I know at all, but from what I can tell from Google, it seems these are historical figures who existed before the time of the main narrative? I'm just wondering if they might be better off being nominated as characters, and worldbuilding tags being used for some more specific idea related to them/their time period/their activities. If I have this completely the wrong way round, let me know.

Harry Potter
  • I am leaving all Harry Potter nominations alone for the moment to give nominators time to decide how broad a Harry Potter category they want their nominations to fall under; see here. Please do not use the canonical "Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling" fandom in this instance.

MCU
  • "Worldbuilding: Friendships" has been nominated. Since platonic relationships between characters are often a feature of fanworks anyway, I am a little wary of this tag; could the nominator provide a little more information about why creating works about characters' friendships should be considered worldbuilding, specifically? (I am willing to be convinced, it's just not obvious from the tag by itself.)

Fandoms with no worldbuilding tags, and actual relationship tags instead

If you have nominated any of the fandoms below, please delete the relationship tags and replace with one or more "Worldbuilding: A worldbuilding element (Name of Fandom)" style tags. This exchange will not be matching on relationships (either & or /). Apologies for any confusion; this arises because we are appropriating the AO3 "Relationship" field to handle fandom-specific worldbuilding matching. (It is not possible to rename the field to something else, unfortunately.) For further explanation, please see here and here, or ask for help.

  • Bravely Default (Video Game) & Related Fandoms
  • Haikyuu!!
  • 魔法少女育成計画 | Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku | Magical Girl Raising Project

Please note that fandoms for which no worldbuilding tags have been nominated when nominations close will not be approved.

Update on "RPF": For the record, no has yet tried to convince me that the exchange should include "real world worldbuilding", although for a while "Original Non-Trivial Zeroes of the Riemann Zeta Function" was nominated as a character. As far as I can tell, these can be expressed as complex numbers in the form a+bi, where a may or may not be a half. At the most generous interpretation this isn't a lot of words, so unless a lot of them were found, or they were turned into art in some way (I'm sure there are beautiful visualisations out there), they would be significantly under the minimum requirements for the exchange. It seems as though the fandom has been withdrawn by the nominator, but if it appears again I'm afraid that I will be rejecting it unless some convincing arguments are put forward for its inclusion.

ETA: Just for the record, there are a few fandoms which have been nominated while I've been working on the tag set, but don't (yet) have any worldbuilding tags: Dinosaur Train, Labyrinth, and PAW Patrol.

The tag set is looking great; please do keep adding to it. I have limited time over the next day or two to approve, and there's already a backlog, so please don't worry if there's a bit of a wait; I will get to all of your tags as soon as I can.

A few things:

  • There are a few fandoms where "Original Character(s) (Name of Fandom)" and "No Characters (Name of Fandom)" have not been nominated. I will be leaving approving these fandoms until I have time to sort out nominating those tags for them myself, which may not be for some time. If the nominators could add them, it would be very helpful.
  • There is at least one fandom (maybe more - AO3 doesn't show me all the fandoms at once) in which no Worldbuilding tags at all have been nominated. I will not be approving any fandoms with no worldbuilding tags at all, as I wouldn't like to predict the effect their absence would have on matching. If you are the nominator of "Imperial Steam and Light Series", please add at least one worldbuilding tag in the "Relationship" field. If you have nominated any fandoms that I haven't seen yet without worldbuilding tags, please add them. ETA: I have just found two more fandoms without worldbuilding tags: Haikyuu!! and Bravely Default. For Bravely Default, actual relationship tags have been nominated instead (it is confusing; we're doing a kludgey workaround to get AO3's matching to do what we want). I will hold off on rejecting these relationships for as long as possible to give the nominator a chance to change them to worldbuilding tags.
  • Harry Potter: I have already approved a separate "fandom" for "Harry Potter - wizarding schools around the world" since this seems to be based on a specific piece of extra material provided relatively recently by JKR. There are also nominations in the tag set for "Harry Potter Franchise" and straightforward "Harry Potter". Per the previous clarifications post, the nominator for "Harry Potter Franchise" says that they intend a broad meaning of all HP-related material. I am not sure what the other "Harry Potter" nominators intend. I would like to propose the following split; if the nominators could change their nominations to fit what they intended within this, I will start approving (or if people have other ideas, please explain them in comments and we'll go from there):
    • "Harry Potter - Wizarding World" as a renaming of "Harry Potter Franchise" to be the broadest category: anything and everything set in that universe would be fair game in that category.
    • "Harry Potter - Book Series" for people who want to have only the main seven books considered.
    • ... And then if people want other subdivisions, nominate them as fandoms (e.g. just Cursed Child by itself, FBAWTFT by itself, etc.). Remember that it is fine for fandoms to overlap with each other for our matching purposes. Finally, are there any strong feelings about the film adaptations of the books needing a separate category?

PS If you spot any errors creeping into the tag set, do please say so!

This time I do have some questions.

  • "Harry Potter Franchise" - is this a deliberately broad fandom title intended to embrace all Harry Potter and associated works (e.g. the Fantastic Beasts movie, Cursed Child, Quidditch Through The Ages ...)? It's fine if it is, but I want to be sure before I decide on the correct way to disambiguate the tags for it.
  • RPF - the worldbuilding tags nominated under RPF so far include things like "The coming effects of global warming", "The Riemann hypothesis", and "What shape is the universe?" responses to which which would be better published in academic journals than on AO3, and if successfully addressed would potentially get Nobel Prizes, Field Medals, etc. rather than a few kudos and if you're lucky a nice multi-paragraph squeeful comment. Do people want speculative fanworks based on these aspects of the real world, or are they joke nominations? (There are no character tags nominated under RPF other than No Characters/Original Character(s), which makes me think that the nominator is not interested in stories about people trying to find the answers to these questions so much as answers to the questions themselves.)

I'll be offline for a while now, but I will get back to approving tags soon.

No questions as yet, but a quick note to say please don't worry if it looks from your nominations page like any of yours have been rejected or gone away somehow. I hit a few snags and have fixed them by removing the tags, and then renominating the same things with my own slots. Apologies for any weirdness that causes on your end. As of this post, nothing has actually been rejected for being an inappropriate tag for the exchange.

Also, please do keep an eye on "Uncategorized Fandoms" - some very popular fandoms are likely to end up in there.

A final note: If you're very keen to have your nominations approved as quickly as possible, please follow the guidelines about how to format your tags - annoyingly, the actual nominating page has a standard message from AO3 encouraging you to use canonicals, and that's counterproductive here in most cases, so please ignore it! I am more than happy to fix tags up if they do come through in slightly different formats, but I can only do that when I'm working on the computer. Ticking boxes to approve things already in the correct format, on the other hand, is do-able on the go. (Attempts to do anything more complicated on smartphone were the cause of most of the problems mentioned above.) The main things I'm encountering so far are missing "(Name of Fandom)" at the end of tags, and missing "Worldbuilding: " at the start of worldbuilding tags.

The tag set is here and taking nominations.

Please note that due to the limitations of AO3, we will be using the "Relationships" field to handle worldbuilding elements on a fandom-by-fandom basis.

Please do:

  • Read the Nominations section of the information post for details of how things will work.
  • Disambiguate all nominated tags by adding "(Name of Fandom)" - this will help hugely in approving tags, avoiding migration issues, etc.
  • Use two of the character slots to nominate "Original Character(s) (Name of Fandom)" and "No Characters (Name of Fandom)" each time you nominate a new fandom.
  • Nominate worldbuilding elements as Relationships tags in the format "Worldbuilding: A worldbuilding element (Name of Fandom)"
  • Keep an eye out for posts here on the dreamwidth community asking for clarifications

Please don't:

  • Select AO3 canonicals from the drop down list unless they exactly match what you want (unlikely for anything except fandoms). ETA: For this exchange, please ignore the generic instruction on the AO3 nominating form to choose the canonical if it exists.
  • Nominate actual relationships (& or /) in the Relationships field
  • Worry about the tag set being messy; I will be producing a cleaned up version
