There don't seem to have been any objections to the idea of splitting up OW into smaller subfandoms, so we'll proceed on that basis. I'm going to leave it a further 24 hours to allow people to adjust their noms. If you want to co-ordinate with each other, feel free, but when I start approving I'll be doing it on the same "overlapping fandoms are fine" basis as other fandoms.* However, I won't be approving the umbrella "Original Work" canonical tag.

Please note that once I do start approving, these fandoms will show up in the "Uncategorized Fandoms" section of the tag set.

*I am willing to fold nominations into each other once they're approved, if the request comes from the person who nominated the tags to be moved. So "I saw someone else nominated Original Work - X and I'd like my tags to move there from Original Work - Y" I will action, but "I nominated Original Work - Y and I really think the Original Work - X tags someone else nominated should go in there too", I will not.

(For anyone wondering about other tags, I'm afraid I haven't had anywhere near as much time for tackling the tag set today as I'd hoped, but I still wanted to post this since there's been a fair bit of discussion on the previous post. I do have a definite chunk of free time avaliable tomorrow and am going to make some serious inroads into the remaining tags then.)

Original Works

I'm still holding off on making a final decision about this for another day or so, but it seems that most people are in favour of subdividing into different fandom tags that give more specificity about genre.

It was (very sensibly) suggested that it might help nominators to know what subdivisions there were. I am very much in favour of nominators choosing for themselves rather than me dictating anything, but it obviously doesn't make sense to have a situation where people have to use multiple fandom slots for the exact same ideas under marginally different names.

So far in the tag set I have seen the following used, as further clarification within the disambiguations in the main Original Works fandom and/or as separate fandoms:

(in alphabetical order)
Alpha/Beta/Omega
Fantasy
Fantasy/Sci-Fi
High Fantasy
Low Fantasy
Omegaverse
Post-Apocalyptic
Superheroes
Supernatural
Urban Fantasy

This is definitely not an exhaustive list, just what's currently been put forward by nominators, and if people do want to preserve fine distinctions then that's absolutely fine. The most obvious example of things that could come together are "Alpha/Beta/Omega" and "Omegaverse", unless I'm missing something?

Silmarillion

I have now approved this! Nominators, please take a look to make sure it's come through OK and I didn't mess anything up, whether calling a character by the wrong name or just misspelling Silmarillion in a disambiguation. (I took screen shots of everything before I hit submit, so I should be able to reconstruct anything that did go awry.)

Tag set | Countdown to close of noms

I was hoping to get all the tags for which there weren't any queries approved before posting one of these, but between the high pace at which people are nominating (a Good Thing) and the slow pace at which AO3 is letting me approve (a Bad Thing), I haven't yet got anywhere near, and I have a sufficiently large number of queries that doing this now seems worthwhile. If your fandom is not mentioned below and has not been approved yet, thank you for your continuing patience.

(NB: I am continuing to take people's thoughts on Original Works and the Silmarillion here until around 2200 UTC on Saturday.)

Specific fandom queries

  • Harry Potter Wizarding World - No Pottermore - Teacher Character(s) (HP Wizarding World - No Pottermore) - is the intent of this effectively "Original Teacher Character(s)" or "your pick of any of the canon Hogwarts teachers"? I'd need a fair bit of convincing to approve the latter over a series of tags for named characters.
  • Oblivion (2013) - several characters are nominated as "Any [character name]" - could the nominator expand on what's intended here? (I don't know this movie, and while it seems from the tags as though I should rectify that I don't have time to do so right now.)
  • Outcast - Rosemary Sutcliff - Centurion headed to Dacia (Outcast) - is this a particular identifiable character within the narrative, or just a type of character? (If the latter, I think an "Original" in front might be warranted.)

Fandoms that will not currently be approved

John Wick (Movies) has been nominated with a slate consisting entirely of canonical character and relationship tags. Please see here for details of how worldbuildingex tags are structured - it is somewhat different from most other exchanges.

The Sixth World - Rebecca Roanhorse has no worldbuilding tags nominated. Please add one or more tags (starting "WB: " and using the relationship field) for worldbuilding elements you would like to see explored in fanworks - these can be as broad or as specific as you like.

Beyond these, there are a significant number of fandoms in tag set which do not have the two "default" character tags of "Any or No Character (Fandom)" and "Original Character(s) (Fandom)" nominated. These fandoms will not be approved until these two tags are added (if you are not the original nominator, but want to see these fandoms in the tag set, feel free to nominate them using any spare fandom slots you have).

Since I cannot currently see all of the remaining tags to be approved at once, I cannot be certain that the below is a complete list, but fandoms falling into this category include:

  • DC's Legends of Tomorrow (TV)
  • The Godwhale (TJ Bass)
  • Serial Experiments Lain
  • Silicon Valley (TV)
  • Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation AND Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  • Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
  • Steven Universe (Cartoon)
  • Veep (TV)

Please double check your tags!

Several of the fandoms that haven't yet been approved but are not mentioned above have missing or inconsistent disambiguations, or slight formatting variations (eg there seems to be at least one nominator using "None or Any Characters" instead of "Any or No Characters", and another prefacing worldbuilding tags with "DW: " instead of "WB: "). These are all things that I can (and eventually will) fix, but doing so slows down the rate of approvals even further - if you can assist by modifying them on your end that would be greatly appreciated.

ETA: Harry Potter

Something strange has happened to Harry Potter. I approved "Harry Potter - Books 1-7" and for some reason this seems to have brought "Harry Potter - J K Rowling" into "Already Approved Fandoms", even though it does not appear on the tag set, either the publicly visible version or the back end. I do not currently intend to approve "Harry Potter - J K Rowling" and I am now not at all certain that I would be able to do so even if I did. I do not think that this will have an impact on other Harry Potter tags nominated under other fandom names, but please be alert for possible weirdness and let me know if you spot anything.
worldbuildingmod: Bablyonian map of the world (babylon)
[personal profile] worldbuildingmod
There are two fandoms that I am deliberately holding off on for now because I would ideally like the nominators to be able to discuss amongst themselves and come to a consensus, or at the very least I'd like to hear some different viewpoints to check if I've missed something obvious that should sway a decision one way or the other.

Original Work

As per the previous post, I am considering going along with the idea that some nominators have already used of splitting OW into multiple different subfandoms. No one has yet objected to this, and to be honest I am increasingly attracted to it. If anyone would really dislike it if I asked for OW noms to be split up, please speak up in the next 48 hours or that is probably the direction I will go in.

The Silmarillion - J. R. R. Tolkien

I am approving Tolkien fandoms as and when I get the chance (although it has to be said that LotR with its 43 tags made AO3 throw an error, even though I deliberately avoided approving anything else at the same time ...).

However, the five (so far) Silmarillion nominators all seem to be doing things differently, and my knowledge of it is too patchy to be certain about how to handle things. In particular:
  • Piped tags or not? Some of the nominations are AO3 canonicals, which are always piped; some nominations are piped non-canonical tags (eg with disambiguations); and others still are not piped at all. I'm aware there are strong feelings about this out there; is anyone particularly attached to using the piped names and would object if I simply stripped them back to the first one listed?
  • Relationship noms - at least one nominator seems to be nominating relationships within the character slots (e.g. there are noms for "Elrond & Elros & Maedhros & Maglor" and "Fingon/Maedhros"); I'm afraid this is not, in general, allowed for worldbuildingex. While there are occasional noms in some fandoms for groups that are always considered together in the context of their source canon, these seem from what I can tell to be relationships between distinct characters. Please let me know if there are reasons to consider them as valid noms.

It's very gratifying to see so many nominations in already (the current total of already approved fandoms + those still to deal with is over half of the typical number in previous rounds' tag sets, so it seems that many of you have been very organised this time around and had your nominations ready in advance, and/or we're heading for a much larger tag set overall).

Unfortunately, AO3 is responding relatively slowly and has started throwing errors if I approve more than one or two fandoms at a time; I'm going to experiment a bit over the next few days to see if it behaves better at different times of day (when server load is lower), but it may well be that tag approvals progress slowly this round. As a result, the queries below are probably an incomplete list, as there may well be fandoms I simply haven't seen yet that I also need to be asking about.

Fandom scope queries

  • Original Work

There are (unsurprisingly) many nominations for this already. One enterprising nominator has submitted "Original Work - Alpha/Beta/Omega" as a separate fandom tag, and this has led me to wonder whether people would prefer to do something similar for other "types" of OW. (In the main OW noms already, I've seen things like "Low Fantasy", High Fantasy", "Urban Fantasy", "Fantasy/Sci-Fi" and "Post-Apocalyptic" as extra disambiguations; these could easily become separate fandoms.)

It seems to me that the main advantage of this would be making the tag set more readable (and possibly allowing slightly more fine-grained matching), and the main disadvantages that people would have to use up more slots for it (both in nominating and offering/requesting), and that the OW "fandoms" would end up in Uncategorized. I'm going to leave all these noms for now to allow time for discussion; please do chime in with your thoughts, if you have them.

  • Harry Potter

"Harry Potter - JK Rowling" has been nominated; further to this discussion, I am as a matter of general principle open to arguments that participants do all have a common understanding of the scope of this tag, but to be honest it's going to take a lot of persuading. A more specific tag delimiting exactly what is/isn't included might be helpful. (In previous rounds, we've had things like "Harry Potter - Books 1-7", "Harry Potter - Wizarding World (including Pottermore)", etc.)

  • Babylon 5 & Related Fandoms

I've approved this, but I just want to double check that the nominator is happy that it includes all of the spin off material, the straight to video movies, Crusade, etc.

  • Star Trek

There are many specific Star Trek noms, but also one for the umbrella "Star Trek" fandom -- I'm happy to approve this as an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink fandom (i.e. treating is as encompassing every Prime series, AOS, all the novels, etc.), but wanted to check that is the intent.

More minor issues

Huge thanks to those of you who've adjusted your nominations since the last post. As I work through the tag set, I will fix some things myself but I won't be approving any fandoms that don't have both of "Any or No Characters" and "Original Character(s)" nominated for that fandom in addition to any canon characters you want. Fandoms I've seen so far that this applies to are:

  • Serial Experiments Lain
  • Silicon Valley (TV)
  • several different iterations of Star Trek
  • Veep (TV)

Many of these (and other) fandoms also have patchy/inconsistent disambiguation; if you can make sure every tag -- both character and worldbuilding -- contains something to indicate which fandom it comes from, it does make my life enormously easier and would be greatly appreciated.

Attention: She-Ra nominator

Hi! I think I might have approved one version of your tags at the same time as you were yourself editing your noms, which has made slightly strange things happen on the approval interface. I don't think there's a capital-P Problem, but I'm a little bit loath to tamper further in case the strangeness intensifies; if you'd be willing to email worldbuildingmod@gmx.com with a screenshot of the current state of your noms page from your point of view (and let me know which versions you'd prefer where they're different), I'd be very grateful. Thank you!

This isn't a full clarifications/queries post, but I've made a first pass through the tag set and approved close to 30 fandoms. There are rather more than that waiting to be approved, but almost all of them have nominations that ideally need some modification (certainly a sufficient number that they crowd out any remaining ones that are formatted properly; apologies if yours are in there waiting and none of the list below applies to them -- please also bear in mind that there may be other nominators for your fandom who have not followed the guidelines).

  • Please make sure all tags are disambiguated with the name of the fandom or an abbreviation for it in parentheses afterwards. (Please ignore the instruction on the screen to choose a canonical if it exists; this is standard AO3 boilerplate that I cannot change or remove.)
  • Please make sure all nomination slates include both of the two "default" tags within the "Character" fields: "Any or No Characters (Fandom)" and "Original Character(s) (Fandom)" -- for some fandoms currently awaiting approval, I'm afraid this will mean you have to choose one or more characters to lose (or find a helpful friend/sock who will add the required noms for you)
  • Please nominate worldbuilding tags (prefixed by "WB: ") in the "Relationship" field, NOT actual relationships between two characters. There are five fandoms in the tag set (one nominator's entire slate?) in which there are no worldbuilding tags, but actual A/B type ships instead. Fandoms without any worldbuilding tags at the close of nominations will be rejected.

Thanks for your help; I'm conscious that some of these probably seem like very picky things to most people but manually adjusting the tag set is significantly more time consuming than simply approving correctly formatted noms.

Nominations are now open here. Full nominations information is available in this section of this round's rules post; this post is intended to summarise the most important points, particularly where there are differences from what is typical in most other exchanges.

You can nominate up to five fandoms, with seven character slots and five "worldbuilding" slots (using the AO3 relationship fields) for each.

Fandom names used should make it clear what the scope of the source material intended is. This may mean using AO3 non-canonicals. It is OK in this exchange for nominated fandoms to overlap in whole or in part (e.g. "Star Wars - Movies Only", "Star Wars - Legends", "Star Wars - New EU" would have some elements in common and others not). Crossovers are OK if and only if the crossover happened in canon; in this case, nominate under both fandoms, divided by a / (e.g. "How To Get Away With Murder/Scandal").

Please do:
  • disambiguate all tags with the name of the fandom (please ignore the instructions on the nomination page itself to choose AO3 canonicals - these only occasionally have the disambiguations; unfortunately, this is standard AO3 text that I can't override)
  • nominate the two "default" character tags used in the exchange -- "Original Character(s) (name of fandom)" and "Any or No Characters (name of fandom)" -- in each fandom you nominate
  • preface all worldbuilding tags with "WB: "
  • double check that your character tags are in character fields and your worldbuilding tags are in relationship fields (on the approval interface, I have no way to see which tags were nominated as which)
  • be patient while waiting for your tags to be approved*

Please don't:
  • nominate actual relationships (e.g. A/B, C&D) in the Relationship fields
  • nominate RPF, or worldbuilding tags for close-to-real-world canons that would similarly constitute solely RL research with no use of creativity to answer the questions
  • nominate AU ideas, unless the AU in question appears within the canon
  • nominate fandoms without at least one worldbuilding tag

This post doubles as an evidence post and a brainstorming post. Feel free to comment here to provide extra information you think may help me deal with your nominations, or to discuss with other fans how best to organise your shared fandoms.

I will post clarifications posts regularly during the tag set sorting period; please keep an eye on the comm to see if any of your tags appear with issues or queries.

*Please note that I will be changing how I approach the tag set behind the scenes (in particular, I am trying to build the spreadsheet as I go), which means that it is likely there will be a slightly longer wait for your tags to be approved compared to previous years.

Nominations will close at 1655 UTC on Wednesday 15th January (countdown).
worldbuildingmod: Detail from Carta Marina showing Thule and sea monsters (Default)

The tag set is now closed for nominations. Just in case anyone was literally just about to submit and got caught out, I will grant a 15-minute amnesty - comment on this post before 2210 UTC with the tags that didn't make it and I will add them manually. ETA: amnesty window now closed.

Clean up

Once any last minute tags have been dealt with, I will move into tag set clean up mode.

Please check your own nominations (and, if you're feeling especially helpful, any other fandoms in the tag set you know) for issues such as misspellings, inconsistencies, etc. If you find any, please comment here to let me know. As in previous years, I intend to create a spreadsheet version of the tag set which might be a bit easier to navigate; in the process, I should be able to spot issues like: duplicated tags (either migrated between fandoms or lingering ones from the batch of tags that got doubled up between fandoms); fandoms with missing default character tags; fandoms with inconsistent/missing disambiguations; etc. However, feel free you're welcome to point those out as well so I can get ahead.

Assuming no unexpected hiccups in sorting out the tag set, sign ups should open on time at 2155 UTC on Friday 18th (and may possibly start a little earlier than that if the stars align).

ETA: You may spot a few tags with extra bits of disambiguation that might seem unnecessary - this is because the original versions of those tags were "wandering" (appearing in fandoms they shouldn't) and changing them to the new versions prevented this.

Rejections and Adjustments

For the record, the following were rejected since the last post:
  • White Collar and X-Men - All Media Types and all character tags under them, because neither fandom had worldbuilding tags nominated
  • The Reluctant Widow - Georgette Heyer and all character tags under it, because no evidence was submitted for the only worldbuilding tag after several requests (there were also no default character tags)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (Movies) because the relevant tags were folded into the main TNG fandom, per discussion with the nominator
  • Malcolm Reed under Star Trek: Discovery as I can't find any convincing evidence for assuming he would still be alive by the time of the Discovery series

and the following tags have been adjusted, either following earlier discussion or because they were nominated within the last 24 hours and I made a judgement call:
  • In Chrono Trigger, WB: Janus' early life especially with his magic differing (Chrono Trigger) has been replaced with WB: Life in Zeal (Chrono Trigger) and WB: post-game quest to rescue Crono's mother and/or the cats (Chrono Trigger) has been replaced with WB: Ripple effects from the defeat of Lavos (Chrono Trigger) (per here)
  • In The Last Witch Hunter (2015), I've turned WB: Magical levels (Last Witch Hunter) into a more general WB: Magic (Last Witch Hunter) tag as I can't find any evidence for a specific idea of "levels" in this canon's treatment of magic when searching online
worldbuildingmod: The Nebra Sky Disc (nebra)
[personal profile] worldbuildingmod
There are now 24 hours left to nominate new tags for the tag set. (Countdown.)

Thanks to everyone who has helped clear up the vast majority of previous queries. At this stage, I will start making judgement calls about whether tags I'm unsure about are within the scope of the exchange or not, rather than posting further clarification requests. If you are nominating new tags and think there is any chance at all of me needing further information to understand them, then please do comment here in advance, or get in touch via email (worldbuildingmod@gmx.com), to avoid potential disappointment.

Please also take a look at the nominations guidelines to make sure you have included everything required. (In particular, no fandom will be approved unless it has "Any or No Characters", "Original Character(s)" and at least one worldbuilding tag.)

Existing queries
  • Chrono Trigger - when nominations close, I intend to follow the suggestions here about how to deal with the two remaining tags, unless the nominator themselves gets in touch.
  • Kingsman (Movies) - WB: Kingsman spies but set in Victorian London has been rejected for being an AU prompt for an AU not seen within canon.
  • The Reluctant Widow - Georgette Heyer - this will probably be rejected unless more worldbuilding tags are added, or someone convinces me that there is a distinctively worldbuilding angle to WB: How Francis saves the day as hinted onscreen in the book but not shown.

Fandoms with missing tags
If you are keen to see these fandoms in the tag set, please add the needed tags - you don't have to be the original nominator, just in possession of spare nomination slots.
  • White Collar - needs default character tags and at least one worldbuilding tag - NB since this is a relatively close-to-real-world canon, I would appreciate further information about why worldbuilding tags submitted for this fandom are specific to this particular fictional world, rather than being effectively requests for RL research.
  • X-Men - All Media Types - needs at least one worldbuilding tag. (To be completely honest, this seems to have become something of a zombie nomination; the original nominator has withdrawn their tags, leaving only the two default character tags that it appears someone else added to be helpful. X-Men (Movieverse) is already in the tag set, and there are X-Men characters nominated for Marvel (Comics).)
worldbuildingmod: The Nebra Sky Disc (nebra)
[personal profile] worldbuildingmod
There are almost exactly three days left from the time of this post until the close of nominations (countdown).

Fandoms with missing tags

To be approved, all fandoms need to have the "Any or No Characters" and "Original Character(s)" character tags nominated, and at least one worldbuilding tag.

At present, the following five fandoms are missing at least one of the two character tags: The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells, Dark is Rising Sequence - Susan Cooper, Fallout: New Vegas, Midsummer Night's Dream - William Shakespeare, White Collar

And two fandoms have no worldbuilding tags: White Collar, X-Men - All Media Types

Queries about new tags in already approved fandoms
  • Chrono Trigger - WB: Janus' early life especially with his magic differing (Chrono Trigger), WB: post-game quest to rescue Crono's mother and/or the cats (Chrono Trigger) - I am willing to be convinced (particularly on the first of these two), but these seem more like character/plot prompts than specifically worldbuilding related.
  • Kingsman (Movies) - WB: Kingsman spies but set in Victorian London - the backstory has the Kingsman organisation being founded post-WWI, so this seems like a prompt for a non-canon AU; this tag will be rejected after 48 hours unless a pretty spectacular counterargument appears

Not-yet-approved fandoms
  • Jean Robertson Series - Janet Sandison - this seems to be a very-close-to-real-world canon (e.g. it's described as "semiautobiographical"), so I'm not sure that the worldbuilding tags nominated ("Country vs Town", "Honour vs Rules", "The Depression", "Women's Roles") constitute prompts for extrapolation of the fictional world, as opposed to historical research. I am not completely closed to being persuaded otherwise, but at present am leaning towards rejecting this fandom; I will do this after 48 hours.
  • The Reluctant Widow - Georgette Heyer - the only nominated worldbuilding tag is "How Francis saves the day as hinted onscreen in the book but not shown" - this seems to me to be filling in gaps in canon but not necessarily in a "worldbuilding" way

Previous queries
  • Supergirl (TV 2015) - WB: the Xenosexual Scene and Maggie's Bildungsroman - I have adjusted this tag to just "WB: the Xenosexual Scene" but am willing to change it back if a good argument is presented
  • Original Work - WB: Hallmark Channel Small Town Gothic - I still feel as though this is a setting in which more specific worldbuilding tags could be nominated, rather than a worldbuilding tag in and of itself. At present, I am leaning towards rejecting this, but I have the feeling I may be misunderstanding the intent.
  • End of Eternity | Resonance of Fate - WB: Massacre Cult details - I still can't find any evidence for the existence of this (e.g. searching for the word "cult" on the fandom's wiki gets no returns), so am leaning towards rejection. This is currently the only worldbuilding tag nominated for this fandom; I will not reject the whole fandom at this stage, but it will not be approved without worldbuilding tags

(I have decided to give it a bit longer before rejecting the last two tags mentioned above, either to allow the nominator to explain or use the slot for something else.)
worldbuildingmod: Bablyonian map of the world (babylon)
[personal profile] worldbuildingmod
I've decided to make this post a round-up/repost of all remaining issues.

New query
  • Critical Role (Web Series) - Original Character(s): Cyclops Stormcaller and Original Character(s): Goliath Stormborn - it isn't clear to me whether these are specific characters whose existence is stated in canon (in which case they could just be nominated as "Cyclops Stormcaller" and "Goliath Stormborn") - nominations for characters which don't actually appear in canon but whose existence is stated or implied are fine in worldbuildingex - or whether they are descriptions of a type of character of which there could be more than one (in which case they could be nominated as "Original Cyclops Stormcaller" and "Original Goliath Stormborn").

Outstanding queries

These are queries from previous posts which have not yet received replies. I am going to explain what I intend to do in each case if I still haven't received any feedback on these within the next 48 hours. (I will prioritise feedback from the nominator - you can prove that you are the nominator by posting a link to your nominations page; only yourself and I as the mod of the tag set will be able to access this link.)
  • Supergirl (TV 2015) - WB: the Xenosexual Scene and Maggie's Bildungsroman - if "Maggie's Bildungsroman" is something Maggie is writing (i.e. a text within the text) then it is definitely fair game as worldbuilding, but I can't find any evidence for this searching online, and my instinct is that this is more like a mixed worldbuilding and character prompt. My intention here is to edit the tag to just "WB: the Xenosexual Scene" - someone who wanted to match on this specifically in the context of Maggie could do so by using Maggie (who is in the tag set) as the only character tag

Fandoms that will currently not be approved

I am loath to reject fandoms outright, partly because I would prefer their nominators to be able to use the slot for something else, and partly because other nominators might later come and nominate valid tags, but find themselves unable to do so if the entire fandom had been rejected. However, fandoms with no worldbuilding tags will not be accepted and will be rejected at the close of nominations.

At present this applies to the following fandoms:
  • TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works & Related Fandoms - only character tags nominated; I also feel that this is too broad, encompassing Tolkien works that have no connection to one another and so fall under the "no non-canonical crossovers" rule (a specific Lord of the Rings books-only tag is already in; in previous years, a lot of Tolkien tags have been nominated under categories like "Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien")
  • Final Fantasy XV - "relationship" slots have been used for canonical AO3 ship tags, not worldbuilding tags
  • Naruto - "relationship" slots have been used for canonical AO3 ship tags, not worldbuilding tags
  • Star Trek - only character tags nominated; a lot of smaller subdivisions of Star Trek are now in the tag set, but I could be persuaded on this fandom tag being useful, although it is very broad
  • X-Men - All Media Types - "relationship" slots have been used for canonical AO3 ship tags, not worldbuilding tags; also another broad fandom, though again one that an argument could be made for

Quite a lot in this post, I'm afraid (the flip side of the fact that the approved tag set has just doubled in size).

Fandoms in need of double checking

The performance of the AO3 tag set interface has been much better so far this year (touch wood), but I did hit a minor issue earlier on today due to a momentary loss of Internet connection, which caused some tags to appear twice, or even three times, in the tag set under the same fandom. I believe that I have now fixed it on the back end, but if you had nominations in any of the following fandoms please check that they made it through intact: Giant Robo, Harry Potter (Books 1-7), Harry Potter - Wizarding World (No Pottermore), Killjoys (TV), Psychic Force, Quantum Leap, Sunshine (2007)

ETA: I missed at least one that should have been on that list: SCP Foundation - this is now fixed, but if anyone spots any other fandoms with repeated tags, please let me know.

Complex fandoms (with significant overlap, broad scope, etc.)

I have now approved the following, after discussion on previous posts (or a lack of discussion that led me to conclude that no one had any objections to what had been nominated): Doctor Who (2005), Dragon Age - AMT, Dragon Age (Video Games), Dragon Age: The Last Court, Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation

There are some fandoms that have been recently nominated that I would similarly like to give people a chance to discuss if desired. However, if there are no objections within 48 hours or so, I will approve these as they currently are: Deus Ex (Video Games), Hunger Games - AMT, Percy Jackson & Related Fandoms - AMT, The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien, Power Rangers (I would be curious to find out from the LotR nominator in particular whether this is deliberately intended to exclude The Hobbit as well as other Middle-Earth material such as the Silmarillon)

There is also a nomination for A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms - the book series and Game of Thrones (TV) are both already in the tag set. Is there a specific desire for the "& Related Fandoms" for this particular nomination? (The only worldbuilding tag is "WB: Events of the Book as Educational Curriculum in the Future")

There are also a number of new Black Mirror nominations; these appear to all be for the USS Callister episode, which is already in the tag set (in the "Uncategorized Fandoms" section). Since Black Mirror is an anthology show with no worldbuilding elements in common from one episode to the next, I would prefer separate nominations for each episode. Unless I hear convincing arguments to the contrary in the next 24 hours, I will fold the nominations currently under "Black Mirror" into the USS Callister part of the tag set.

"Creator - Works" nominations

In addition to the TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works & Related Fandoms nomination mentioned previously (which also has the issue of no worldbuilding tags being nominated), there are now AUSTEN Jane - Works and CLAMP - Works nominations. On reflection, and rather reluctantly (the idea of an Austen Literary Universe is very appealing), I have come to the conclusion that these are too broad for worldbuildingex purposes, and would constitute crossovers that didn't happen in canon. (The semi-exception here is CLAMP, where I rather suspect most or even all of the same tags could be nominated under slightly more specific crossover fandom tags.)

Fandoms with relationships nominated instead of worldbuilding tags

Thanks to the nominators who have been helping out by adding the default character tags for some fandoms that didn't previously have them. However, three of those fandoms still cannot be approved as they have no worldbuilding tags nominated; instead, the original nominator has used canonical AO3 relationship tags in the "Relationship" fields. (Worldbuilingex uses the "Relationship" tags effectively as freeforms tied to a specific fandom, which AO3 does not support directly.) These fandoms are: Final Fantasy XV, Naruto and X-Men - All Media Types

There are also two fandoms with a similar situation but worldbuilding tags have been nominated by other nominators: Boku no Hero Academia and Stardew Valley - I would prefer not to reject the relationship tags to give the original nominator the chance to use those slots for worldbuilding tags, but I do reserve the right to reject if their continued presence makes navigating the approval interface difficult.

Specific queries

  • Original Work - WB: Hallmark Channel Small Town Gothic feels more like a specific OW setting than a worldbuilding tag in and of itself to me, but I am open to persuasion
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (Movies) - WB: Data adjusts to his emotion chip, the only currently nominated worldbuilding tag, feels more like a character prompt. I have accepted a number of other tags elsewhere that are along this border (including Data-related ones in TNG), but feel that this particular one is too far on the other side. My current inclination is to reject this particular tag but add a more general "WB: emotion chip" tag in the main ST: TNG section (which I would interpret as including the movies), but I will wait before enacting this to hear any counterarguments.

For any tags that were nominated before about 2100 UTC today, are not mentioned above, but have not yet been approved, I am waiting for responses or further discussion on one of the two previous clarification posts.

General nomination formatting issues

Thanks to those nominators who have adjusted their nominations since the last post. The table below shows the specific issues holding up most remaining fandoms at this point. For fandoms marked only in the first column, I will add the disambiguations myself when I have more time available, but if the nominators adjust them for me, they will likely be approved much more quickly. Fandoms marked in either of the latter two columns will need to have the required tags added before they will be approved. (NB This does not have to be done by the original nominator.)

A * by a fandom name above indicates that there are other queries, either in this post or the previous one. NB you may find that you have well-formatted nominations for one or more of the fandoms listed above; if this is the case, there are other nominators for that fandom whose nominations need adjusting.

Specific queries

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) - Anyanka and Anya Jenkins are listed separately, but refer to the same character at different times - I am minded to turn these into a piped tag Anyanka | Anya Jenkins but am willing to listen to arguments against this.
  • End of Eternity | Resonance of Fate - WB: Massacre Cult details is the only worldbuilding tag submitted; searching online, I can't find evidence that the game contains a "Massacre Cult", please could the nominator confirm?
  • Star Trek - this is a very broad tag encompassing everything put out under the Star Trek imprimatur in all formats from the last 50+ years; there are currently several Star Trek subfandoms awaiting approval - TNG, TOS and the novels (see below) - and AOS and AOS-verse DS9-era are already approved. Please could the nominator confirm that the umbrella tag is what they want and/or discuss with other Star Trek nominators (eg in the comments).
  • Star Trek - Various Authors - as far as I can tell, this is the AO3 tag for the various Star Trek spinoff novels. The tags nominated so far seem to be specifically for the Rihannsu novels; would a more specific fandom tag be appropriate?
  • Star Wars - All Media Types - I'm a little wary about approving this fandom as it would encompass multiple continuities that are mutually contradictory by explicit intent of the creators. If the nominator definitely wants to be able to request/offer works drawing on all Star Wars material, both Legends and new EU, please confirm.
  • TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works & Related Fandoms - the scope of this seems extremely large to me (i.e. I would interpret it to encompass the likes of Farmer Giles of Ham and The Father Christmas Letters). If this really is what the nominator wants, please confirm.

It's great to see so many people enthusiastically nominating so early. As of about 1420 UTC I have approved all tags I feel completely confident about; below are the issues that have meant I have not approved others.

ETA 2230 UTC: there are now several more fandoms awaiting approval with the same issues as those outlined in the first section below; please check that you have followed the nominations guidelines - all tags (for both characters and worldbuilding) need to be disambiguated, and all fandoms need to have as a minimum the following: "Any or No Characters", "Original Character(s)", and at least one worldbuilding tag.

Disambiguation, missing default character tags, lack of worldbuilding tags

A fairly large number of fandoms remaining have one, two, or all three of the following issues:
  • None or almost none of the tags have been disambiguated; I am willing to add these in while approving where only a few have been missed, but this is too time consuming for entire fandom slates that are missing their disambiguations (please disregard the instructions on the nominations submission page to choose AO3 canonicals - this is not ideal for this exchange for quite a number of reasons; unfortunately, I cannot override this text)
  • The "default" character tags "Original Character(s) (Name of Fandom)" and "Any or No Characters (Name of Fandom)" have not been submitted (if you have already used more than five character slots for characters in the fandom, you will need to choose some to change, sorry)
  • No worldbuilding tags have been included in the Relationship fields (a few of these fandoms have actual relationships nominated; these will definitely not be approved)

The fandoms in question are: Boku No Hero Academia, Dragon Age - All Media Types, Final Fantasy XV, Killjoys (TV), Maria-sama ga Miteru, Naruto, Pandemic Legacy, Star Wars - New EU, Stardew Valley, Witches of East End (TV), X-Men - All Media Types (please also see the following section for Dragon Age and X-Men)

For further clarification, please refer to the detailed nominations information in the rules post; if you still have queries, please get in touch either in the comments of this post or via email to worldbuildingmod@gmx.com

Queries about intended scope

I am happy to approve all of the following in principle (though some have other issues as noted above), but want to be sure that everyone is on the same page about the intended scope of the canon that could be drawn upon.
  • Doctor Who (2005) - I would interpret this to be only the TV episodes from Rose onwards (i.e. currently to Resolution) but none of the various spin-off novels, comics, etc.
  • Dragon Age - All Media Types, Dragon Age (Video Games), Dragon Age: The Last Court - I don't know much about the details of this fandom, but if fans want to discuss the overlaps between these please do so
  • Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch - I would interpret the general fandom tag to include the comics. If the nomination is intended to be for books only, please change the fandom name to clarify ETA: the original nominator has clarified this as being the scope they intended; if other nominators were looking for something more restricted, please let me know
  • X-Men - All Media Types - this is very broad; while I think it could be done (for example, within the framework of Marvel's parallel universes) I am not sure that this is the nominator's intention. Please note that this fandom also has no default character tags or worldbuilding tags (see above)

Apart from the fandoms with other issues, if I hear nothing I will start approving these within 48 hours assuming that the nominators are happy with them as is.

Specific queries

These fandoms have been approved but I'm holding back on some specific tags within them.

  • K: Christmas 1944 - Adolph K. Weismann (character) - the online sources I can find use "Adolf"; does this matter?
  • Supergirl (TV 2015) - WB: the Xenosexual Scene and Maggie's Bildungsroman - I'm unclear what's intended by "Maggie's Bildungsroman", and whether or not it qualifies as worldbuilding rather than characterisation

  • double check that your character tags are in character fields and your worldbuilding tags are in relationship fields (on the approval interface, I have no way to see which tags were nominated as which)
  • be patient while waiting for your tags to be approved

Please don't:
  • nominate actual relationships (e.g. A/B, C&D) in the Relationship fields
  • nominate RPF, or worldbuilding tags for close-to-real-world canons that would similarly constitute solely RL research with no use of creativity to answer the questions
  • nominate AU ideas, unless the AU in question appears within the canon
  • (ETA) nominate fandoms without at least one worldbuilding tag

This post doubles as an evidence post and a brainstorming post. Feel free to comment here to provide extra information you think may help me deal with your nominations, or to discuss with other fans how best to organise your shared fandoms.

I will post clarifications posts regularly during the tag set sorting period; please keep an eye on the comm to see if any of your tags appear with issues or queries.

Nominations will close at 2155 UTC on Wednesday 16th January (countdown).

One hour left until the tag set closes. Get your last minute nominations in now!

EDIT: The tag set is now closed for nominations.

There will now be a fifteen minute amnesty in case anyone just missed out on submitting their noms at the last moment. Comment on this post within that timeframe and I will add your tags manually.

EDIT2: ... And time's up.

Just over 24 hours left until the tag set closes!

Since we're so close to the end of noms, rather than simply asking questions, I will indicate here what I intend to do if the tags remain the same/nominators don't comment here to clarify. These represent my best guess and I am just as open to discussion as if they had been questions.

Harry Potter - Books 1-7

  • Minister of Magic - If this is a character tag, I think it should specify which. If it's about the position in general, I think it should be a worldbuilding tag. (If the tag remains as is by close of noms and I don't hear anything, I will default to renaming this "Cornelius Fudge" as he is in post for the first five books.)
  • WB: Sub-status of Sentient Races - I'm not 100% clear on what "sub-status" is meant to mean here. (This may be because I'm too used to seeing the word in other contexts.) I think we're talking about wizards' oppression of giants, goblins, house elves, werewolves, etc., so I'll probably swap for "Oppression" in the absence of other information.

Power Rangers Dino Charge

  • WB: Efforts of Having a Secret Identity - unless I hear differently, I am going to swap "Efforts" for "Difficulties" in this tag, as that's my best guess at the intended meaning.

Original Work

  • Bookseller, Librarian, WB: Bookstore, WB: Magical library - these seem to have been nominated together, and given the last I intend to disambiguate them as "(Original Work - Fantasy)" if they remain as is at the end of nominations.

(Incidentally, if you'll excuse a moment of self-indulgence: in thinning out my exchange bookmarks of now-redundant links from Round 1, I discovered that today is the anniversary of an idle conversation on FFA rapidly turning into me making firm plans to run this exchange. Thanks to everyone who made it such an enjoyable experience that I wanted to do it again this year!)

Please make sure that both character and worldbuilding nominations for Original Work are disambiguated with some suggestion of genre, however broad or narrow you like. I would prefer this as it avoids the risk of a mismatch of expectations between requests and offers (for example, "WB: Shields" would be interpreted very different in a high fantasy setting compared to a pulp SF one).

In the already approved tags, we have:

  • Original Work - Fantasy
  • Original Work - High Fantasy
  • Original Work - Urban Fantasy
  • Original Work - Science Fiction
  • Original Work - Pulp SF
  • Original Work - Omegaverse

But of course many more could be added.

If there are any Original Work nominations remaining at the close of nominations that lack such clarification, I will assign them to whichever of the already existing ones seems the best fit, but I won't create brand new categories.

Three days left for nominations ... If you've been carefully crafting shortlists of possible tags, this weekend's the time to decide which to put in.

Just a couple of things outstanding at the moment, thanks to one or more kind nominators who have helped fix the fandoms with missing characters:

  • Power Rangers Dino Charge - WB: Efforts of Having a Secret Identity. I'm still not clear on the intent of this tag. Is it about the difficulty of maintaining secret identities? Or something broader?
  • Black Mirror. On further reflection it occurs to me that we could deal with anthology series like this in the same way as Original Works, with further disambiguation in the tags, e.g. "(Black Mirror - USS Callister)". I will apply this idea on the next update unless there are strong objections.
worldbuildingmod: The Nebra Sky Disc (nebra)

Tags in already-approved fandoms

  • Original Work - some worldbuilding tags have been added without disambiguations. Please disambiguate with "Original Work" and some sort of suggestion of a broad genre, e.g. "(Original Work - high fantasy)", "(Original Work - pulp SF)", "(Original Work - soulmates)", etc.

Not yet approved fandoms

  • Black Mirror - the two worldbuilding tags nominated so far are from different episodes, with completely different worldbuilding. Mostly, this has made me realise that I should have considered anthology series at some point in setting up the rules! I'm quite happy to approve this as-is for now and make a note to work things out properly before next round, but I'll give it 24 hours or so from this post in case anyone wants to discuss it in the comments.
  • Obernewtyn Chronicles - Isobelle Carmody and Pokemon (Main Video Games) are new additions to the missing character tags list. Given that no character tags at all are nominated under the Pokemon one, I did wonder whether the nominator's intention was to add extra worldbuilding nominations to "Pokemon (Main Video Games & Colosseum/XD)", which is already in the tag set in the Uncategorized Fandoms section.
